The down scaling of CMOS technologies has brought about the increased variability of key parameters affecting the performance of integrated circuits. This book provides a single text that combines coverage of the strain-engineered MOSFETS and their modeling using TCAD, making it a tool for process technology development and the design of strain-engineered MOSFETs.

Rent the book, don't buy it.

This is not a terribly good book, although it has a good bit of useful information scattered throughout. The text is readable, but often repetitive. It frequently seems as if the authors have forgotten what they wrote in one section by the time they've moved on to the next. Some chapters appear to have been written 7-8 years ago when industrial use of strained-silicon devices was just starting, so that the technology is presented as promising rather than proven. Nice introductory discussion of stress and strain tensor analysis for those of us who have long forgotten what little we knew about elasticity. There are a couple of chapters on modeling and variability that contain some nifty graphs of how key parameters (e.g. ION and IOFF, effective oxide thickness, and so on) have changed with the different process nodes, but no description of what role strained silicon has played in maintaining these trends -- a curious oversight for a book on this topic. Almost all the data seems to come from PhD theses -- not necessarily a bad thing, but where are the actual industry results? I imagine this was done to avoid any copyright issues, but, much as I like to dump on IEEE, they're actually pretty good about providing permission to use specific data and graphs as long as you provide attribution in return.

So I'm glad I only rented the book. Worth $40 but not > $100.

All principals everywhere need to read this book. In todays world, teachers are blamed for all the wrong things.
It is simple- tell teachers that they make a difference in your school and they will follow you everywhere.
We all need to know our hard efforts make a difference. If you are a teacher- buy this and slip in in your principal's mailbox, perhaps he/ she might read it. Blaming teachers for students not learning is like blaming doctors for people getting sick. Give compliments to teachers- it is powerful!

Own and just bought as a gift!!

I recommend this book for anyone going into administration or a leadership role. Gives excellent ideas on how to show your staff you greatly appreciate them without spending a lot of $$$. Also gives ideas for small, random "thank you's". Educators work very hard to mold successful little people and many times, they are left feeling unappreciated. A little hand written note goes a long way to many people.

Inspiring, inspirational, and informational

As a woman who is about to embark on the exact same journey this book is all about, I found this text so encouraging. It has become my second Bible. Helena Lumme brings together a mix of inspiring women in tbe film industry. Their insight and experience in the film business is not only refreshingly honest, but inspirational as well. From the early days of film making to the present, women have been a major part of the moviemaking process. It makes me proud to not only be a woman but hopefully become a part of a wonderful legacy of a daring and courageous women. The information is all encompassing to the passion they each feel about not only their work but the journey they took to get there. Mika Manninen photography not only puts a face on most of these unseen women but also captures their very soul in the lens. My heartfelt thanks go to not only Lumme but the women she interviewed for this piece.

Originally found this in the library, but it's the kind of book one should OWN

I've always been interested in theatre and movies, but when I was a kid and even in my mid-thirties, even though I've published books, getting involved in movies seemed like suddenly wanting to become President of the United States. So I bought this book and refer back to it whenever aspects of producing an indie film seem daunting. This book's beautiful and great. GIRL DIRECTOR is another fun book (although originally for little girls). So you should buy this book if you can afford such a beautiful hard cover photograph book, and support the authors so publishers know we're out here and interested.

An invaluable 'how-to' book for PA's to Producers

As a woman in film school at USC, I craved books like this. Usually what I found was dry text giving me a history lesson, accompanied by some poorly reproduced photos. I opened Great Women of Film and discovered something completely different. This is a book that wants to inspire its readers, through its variety of subjects, presented in bold and evocative portraits, with interviews chock full of realistic advice and lessons learned. There are no stories of nepotism or unearned breaks, each of these women took risks, worked hard and fearlessly dedicated themselves to their crafts. These are woman in front of and behind the camera, directors, writers, set decorators, producers, cinematographers, and special effects artists. As I read, I wished each woman could be my mentor, then I realized that's exactly what this book offers--the advice, wisdom, and can-do encouragement of accomplished women who want to see more of us out there with them. The film industry may still be a male-dominated world, but I would pay double to see a movie whose crew was made up solely of these Great Women of Film. Oh, and the book concludes with an index of resources, from schools to non-profits to guilds and unions that exist to help women in film.

An excellent study on Jane Austen's novels

This book is an interesting and insightful analysis on Jane Austen, her novels and her social and ideological milieu. After an introductory chapter on Jane Austen in relation with the Novel, Society, Education and Language, Tony Tanner dedicates the next chapters to a detailed study on Jane Austen's novels, including the incomplete Sandition. Tanner is highly effective in relating the historical, social and artistic circumnstances in Austen's time and how they influence the main themes and values present in her novels. As a result, the reader is able to have a clearer picture of Jane Austen and the evolution of both her writing style and her perspectives of society and the human person. Tanner has a clear style of writing, never losing the interest of the reader. A great work for the literary scholar and the general reader.

A glimpse of the author through her works...

Jane Austin was a Tory. She was born in 1775, the year of the American Revolution, lived through the French Revolution, the Jacobin 'Terror' and the Age of Napoleon, and died just after Waterloo. The quiet English countryside she knew and loved became imperiled by many factors during her lifetime.
Tanner, a reader at Cambridge, has written an insightful literary criticism about the seven novels Austen wrote (Sandition was incomplete at the time of her death). His book is written for the 'close' reader of Austen's work. I was introduced to his text in one of my courses on Austen.
For example, in his chapter on 'Mansfield Park' Tanner lays out the underpinnings of the story as one of conflict between the order of the rural countryside (Mansfield Park) versus the disorder of Portsmouth and the corrupting influence of London. Various characters stand for these places as well as the moral failings of society. The three sisters Mrs. Price (lust) represents Portsmouth, Mrs Norris (envy) and Mrs. Bertram (sloth) represent Mansfield Park on the verge of breakdown. The Crawfords (avarice) interlopers from London, reprent the alluring but treacherous ways of urban life. Fanny, Edmund, and Mr. Bertram represent the ordered rural life.
When asked what "Mansfield Park' was about, Ms. Austen replied it was about "ordination." The word ordination comes from the Latin word--ordo. Tanner says Ms. Austen, concerned "with the problem of how a true social order could be maintained, particularly in a troubled period, clearly considered the role of the clergyman as being of special importance."
Tanner says Mansfield Park is loaded with symbolism. For example, on a group walk Fanny stays on the straight and narrow path by remaining stationary on a bench, while Edmund and Mary Crawford walk the Serpintine path. Maria and Julia stray from the cultivated garden into the "wilderness" behind the iron gate with Henry Crawford.
Fanny Price wears an amber cross, a gift from her beloved brother William. She hangs it on a gold chain given her by Edmund. Wearing these two gifts over her heart gives her "inner peace."
Fanny is the center of the story. Although many readers may perceive her as a prig, she is a very complex character. She is Austen's source of Good Orderly Direction. At the end, Mr. Bertram the "lord" of Mansfield Park recognizes her as his "true" daughter.

Thought Provoking

I recently read a Penguin edition of Sense and Sensibility with an introduction by Tony Tanner. It was my enjoyment of that piece that made me seek this book out. Each chapter analyzes one of Austen's books, the unfinished Sanditon included. The introduction, with the assertion that in writing about civility Austen was really writing about civilization, and situating her work in its social and political climate, was particularly challenging. This broader picture was most welcome. I also liked how Dr. Tanner quoted and refuted Austen's detractors, and how he compared her stylistically to other authors of the era.
