Dreadfully dry, plain and boring!

I don't even think they are trying to help you stay awake reading this text. The information is there, but presented in two straight, rarely interrupted, vertical columns of small dry text. Rare pictures or visual data, no study questions as u read the chapter, no indented space down the side of the text, for notes, summaries, or definitions. This is the complete info presented. And that's it. It would be interesting to see them
engaging and therefore teaching the student, but I don't think they were trying to do that. They are just presenting the info.

Chaos

I am a senior Political Science major, taking this class to clean up some core classes. This book it very dry and makes so many references to additional chapters that it is difficult to grasp the material at hand. Very disappointing.

UMUC Textbook

THIS BOOK SUCKS!!! I bought this book because it was the required text for UMUC's GVPT280 (Comparative Politics) I have read a lot of textbooks. This book hands down is the driest textbook I have ever read. I love politics, but if this would have been the first class that I had taken I would have switch majors. UMUC there are better books out there. Please pick a different one.

Street smarts . . .

In conversations with 58 Cairo cab drivers, this entertaining novel is a street-level and street-smart portrait of the City on the Nile. Each chapter is a character sketch, no two alike, though there is a theme that runs through most of them - the near impossibility of making a living driving a taxi in this crowded and chaotic metropolis. Each man has a story to tell, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious. Taken together they are a lament for the country's economic problems, the undependability of government, and the frustrations of dealing with law enforcement and a vast bureaucracy that seems unable to operate without the payment of bribes at every turn.

The quality of life, as observed by the men behind the wheel, is on a steady trend downward, and often their personal lives are cause for a yet additional string of grievances. Wives complain; children are intractable. The narrator encounters, cynicism, despair, rage, fatalism, faith finally in a just and protecting God. Meanwhile, relief from chagrin comes in the form of humor, as we listen in on an exchange of political and sexual jokes while drivers wait in a long queue at a petrol station. And on rare occasions there's a man who has achieved a kind of beatific peace with it all. If social and political realities are to be found beyond the limited vision of news coverage, this is the place to look.

Interesting contemporary Egyptian novel

Taxi is an interesting patchwork of a novel by the freshly-minted Egyptian journalist-commentator-filmmaker cum writer Khaled al-Khamissi. The fifty-eight chapters that comprise this unusual book represent fifty-eight separate taxi rides taken by the narrator, who is merely the guise of a thinly-veiled al-Khamissi. This work is, in some sense, an ethnographic novel in that it attempts to portray the working lives of Cairo's 80,000+ taxi drivers through punctuated scenes (chapters) which are a cross-section of that part of society.

Al-Khamissi's portrayal of the Cairene cabby is definitely sympathetic though not patronizing. While giving due credence to the unique social and political perspectives that taxi drivers maintain by virtue of their near-constant physical presence on the maddening city streets, he does not shy away from revealing some of the wackier encounters with those drivers who spout conspiracy theories, conservatism and tales of faux poverty.

There are moments of knowing and astute political irony in Taxi. An example of the meta-critique of Egyptian government that pervades the book occurs in chapter seven, where the driver laments Egypt's arcane statutes regarding seatbelts and the myriad laws and tariffs and cost of it all to be borne by the poor taxi driver. At the end of that particular encounter after mentioning how he skirts the law by only installing a decorative rather than functional seat belt to appease the authorities, the driver tells the narrator: "We live a lie and believe it. The government's only role is to check that we believe the lie, don't you think?"

Mr. al-Khamissi works hard at being representational of the whole of Egyptian society through the work of the commentary and dialogue offered by his characters. Yet in his desire for a complete cross-section of Cairo taxi culture all of the offstage laboring by the author began to seep into the text. The first twenty-five episodes are interesting and insightful but they eventually began to feel like a gimmick and came perilously close to monotony. If it were a television series it would have been canceled after half a season.

But it is not episodic television, it is is a book, and its annoyances do not detract from its originality as an interesting new voice in pop-Arab fiction. The chapters provide often captivating nuggets of insight into the concerns and ebbs and flows of daily life in one of the world's largest cities, and most important countries. A helpful glossary in the back is included for readers less familiar with details of the culture.

Jonathan Wright's English translation of the colloquial Egyptian Arabic is good though a bit uneven. Yet Wright is to be commended for taking a frenetic text and rendering it into something readable and perhaps appealing for an English-speaking audience. We ought to have more popular fiction in translation and not just higher-brow literary novels (Taxi has been on Arabic language bestsellers lists for more than a year).

A facinating book. Well worth the read for anybody headed for Egypt or interested in Egypt and the Arab world. .It has a lot to say about the challenges we as a nation face in that part of the world. A wonderful account of what people really think, at least taxi drivers.

SWEET. SIZZLING. PERFECTION.

Ahhhhhhh! Reece, Reece, Reece!!!! Sweet, sinful Reece. Gah!

This man.

I love him with the kind of love that borderlines fanatical! He's something else. Another dimension. He's so broken, so intense, but also so soft and sweet. It's a beautiful and dynamic paradox. It makes me shiver. As I was reading Sinfully Mine, I felt myself falling. I was at the edge of a cliff and I tumbled head first into a full blown love fest. He took ALL of my senses and put them on high alert. It was amazing. I really and truly can't explain it.

After reading and adoring The Gentleman Mentor, I was a buzz with what was going to happen in this book. I had huge expectations. HUGE. The sneak peek at the end of Hale's novel was such a tasty and tantalizing morsel, I knew I had to get my hands on Reece and Macey's story. And I had to do it soon. It was going to be good, I just knew it.

What I didn't know was that Reece was so much more damaged than Hale. That caught me off guard. I'm not sure why, but he was so much deeper than I initially thought he was. He's tortured by a broken heart and that heart has been closed off, afraid to make any emotional connections with woman. He's living life but not really living. He throws himself into work and he's a hell of a business man. He doesn't take on submissive's. He does scenes at Crave, has hookups here and there, but for the most part, he keeps him self alienated from the world. **Ah, my heart. My Reece.** He exists like that until Macey shows up.

Macey's appearance shakes him to the core. It's been six, long years since they've seen each other. And time hasn't healed old wounds, if anything it's just caused them to ooze silently. During their time apart, Macey's changed. She's not the same girl Reece fell in love. She's a hot blooded, beautiful woman who's coming off a bad break up. She's looking for a change. For something to breathe life into her her veins. She wants to spice things up and she wants Reece.

What I totally ADORED about Macey was that she pushed Reece's limits without realizing it. Her personality is as big as Texas. She's easy to love and a couple times in this story my heart broke for her. Reece doesn't treat her right. He's so broken, he doesn't know how to. He can't. But Macey is a strong woman. She knows what she wants. I loved seeing her relationship with Hale (her brother) and I LOVVVVEDDD seeing Hale's protective side when it came to his sister. It added so much depth to the story!

Ahh! Hale. Reece. **faints** You have to meet these men. Dear, God. They are HAWTTTTT!

Overall Sinfully Mine rocked. It's steamy, but I think it's more emotional than anything else. The BDSM aspect is very light. Like super, duper light. There are a couple "Dom-ish" scenes but those are more emotionally explosive than anything else. Reece is not open to a relationship, so when Macey shows up and they agree (with Hale's begrudging approval

The Icing on Many Marvelous Cakes

Robbins tells us early that Tibetan Peach Pie is not exactly a memoir, but he describes an early childhood where he is reared by ordinary Southern parents. Thus he wrecks the conception that he must have been fathered by an alien for his mind to work the way it does. His later childhood describes a number of hijinks that led his mother to call him 'Tommy Rotten.' His later adventures, after college, show more adventure, but consistenly he is fighting racism, sexism, and religious bigotry.
He explores both coasts of the North and in-between working for newspapers while further developing his interests in art as well as the written word (even the spoken and unspoken word with an hilarious attempt at performance art).
It isn't until well into the second half of the book that he introduces us to the development of his novels, with special attention to his first, Another Roadside Attraction. Even while he treats the reader to other of his works, he intersperses them with more adventures, this time abroad, often in exotic locales such as Timbuktu.
Without a plot, Tibetan Peach Pie is not typical Tom Robbins, and though he treats the reader to his extraordinary metaphors, sense of humor, and his artistic flair, his writing sometimes falters. For example, his description of an early experience with peyote shouts out "our central nervous systems were vibrating at a frequency ... synchronized with the rhythnms of wild nature" while, a few lines later "a bank of clouds foreclosed on the moon" murmurs like a fake flamingo's fart. But since I am his age, I sympathize that he can no longer pen an outrageous pun on page after page.
Recommended for anyone who has read one or more of Robbins' novels, and especially for those who haven't read even one.

creo que no esta a la altura de sus autores

El libro esta mal traducido o mal escrito, con algunas faltas de sintaxis y de maquetacion. Hay frases que no se entienden. Me ha sorprendido el mal acabado del libro cuando se trata de vender la excelencia.

Hay terminos que confunden y se alejan del objetivo: llamar celebridad a un experto es erroneo pues la popularidad no se precisa en este mercado. Prometer celebridad instantanea no es realista ya que posicionarse como experto en un mercado suele tomar tres a�os como minimo. de modo que las dos palabras del titulo me parecen inadecuadas: no se busca ser una celebridad; ni se consigue ser un experto instantaneamente. No creo que sea una buena promesa, ni que se pueda cumplir. Mal asunto.
Y la palabra reba�o para designar al cliente ideal o target o base de clientes, creo que es ofensiva.

Sobre el contenido, es un nivel muy basico con generalidades. Introductorio.
