Smith reveals that the state's anti-Chinese movement, forged in its struggle over unfree labor, reached eastward to transform federal Reconstruction policy and national race relations for decades to come. Throughout, she illuminates the startling ways in which the contest over slavery's fate included a western struggle that encompassed diverse labor systems and workers not easily classified as free or slave, black or white.

Smith's book offers a fascinating rethinking of Reconstruction and the Age of Emancipation by looking at the battles over "unfree labor" that took place in California from the Gold Rush through Chinese Exclusion. She shows that California was anything but a "free state" and that its diversity of labor systems mattered on the ground in California as well as in national policymaking.

Great Information

This book provided a lot of good information on California during the Civil War Period and beyond and how its view on race, color, and ethnicity shaped the national debate. My only caveat would be that the editors should have looked more close at the text. A lot of repeat information. So, once you recognize it is a story you read before, just skip over it. Could have saved at least a 1/4 of the book. However, it is worth a read if you are a history buff.

Nice Variety, Bold Designs

[[VIDEOID:3080f0b63074e81278d9914cfa5cccac]]I've been "in" to coloring for just under a year now, and I've come to be pretty picky when it comes to which books I want for my coloring book collection. I want books that have variety and patterns, as well as an opportunity to use splashy gel pens. This book gives you all that. It has deep, dark outlines and offers a variety of intricate patterns balanced with pages that give you chance to just color big spaces. I like that the gel pens do not bleed through to the next page; plus, I especially like that there no pictures to color on the back sides of the picture pages. This makes it even easier to prevent bleeds on to the next picture. I also especially like that this "adult" coloring book does NOT come with adult language or sexual innuendoes. I think everyone should be able to have a book they like, so if others like that type of theme, I'm fine with it. I just wanted to let others know that if you're like me, you won't find that in this book labeled "adult." While I'm not fond of pages that have an over-abundance of black-and-white pre-shading, this book at least doesn't go overboard in the quantity of pre-shaded pages. In all, this is a 5-star book that I would recommend to anyone. I received a sample of this product in the mail for my honest, unbiased review.

Fun and lots to color!

This is a really fun adult coloring book. Unlike a lot of the animal based books, the images of the animals in this one are drawn in a mosaic style that allows for maximum creativity. When I have used non-mosaic, field guide style coloring books, I have worried about trying to make the animals an accurate color... thus defeating the purposes of the book in the first place (stress relief and having fun coloring). Also, ever since the coloring craze took hold, a lot of books have skyrocketed in price. I was pleased to find this one on Amazon for a good deal.

Beautiful pictures, if they were all in focus!

These pictures are not all created equal. Not sure how they're made, because some designs are very blurry, others are pixelated or faded with gray lines, instead of black. I am detailed oriented and no matter how nicely I color these in, the quality of the images throws off their beauty, once complete. If these were higher quality images, I wouldn't have any complaints. I ended up giving this to my 8 year old daughter, who isn't nearly as picky as I am. We've owned this coloring book for 3 months. My daughter and I color these pages, and I don't mind as much, since we have fun coloring together.

Life changing book with practical methods to improve your learning skills

Knowledge is power! - But only if we are able to use our knowledge. Otherwise it's worthless. Usually, at school, most children “learn” a lot of things by heart and don't learn how to learn. This is the purpose of this book: learn how to learn more, in less time.

If you learn how to learn, your entire life can change. Knowledge and power are not restricted to a few elites or particular "high IQ" specimen. All you need is to learn how to learn fast, and more important, how to acquire profitable knowledge, rather than cram a vast mass of unorganized facts.

About the Author
Linda T. Elkins-Tanton is the Director of the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University. Her research focusses on the evolution of terrestrial planets and the relationships between Earth and life on Earth. Elkins-Tanton is a two-time National Academy of Sciences Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow. She won a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2008, the Explorers Club Lowell Thomas prize in 2010, and in 2013 was named the Astor Fellow at the University of Oxford. She co-edited Volcanism and Global Environmental Change (Cambridge, 2015), and has written a six-book reference series entitled The Solar System. In 2012 she was honored with an asteroid named 8252 Elkins-Tanton.

Benjamin P. Weiss is a Professor of Planetary Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Chair of the Program in Planetary Sciences within the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. Weiss' research interests include the formation, evolution and history of terrestrial planets and small bodies. Weiss was awarded the Macelwane Medal in 2009 and was the 2003 winner of the Francis and Milton Clauser Doctoral Prize at the California Institute of Techmology. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and in 2012 he was honored with an asteroid named 8069 Benweiss.

It's an academic peer review sort of book, which is not boring but the Benefits of Being Bad mention studies that make you question the evidence, because the evidence seems to be geared towards the specific theme of the book; finding evidence that being bad has positives. It's a quick read, but the hidden benefits of being bad do not overcome the benefits of being good.

Beautiful Book

I've always liked Desmond Morris' books, and this one was quite a pleasant surprise. It's a beautiful coffee table book, with tons of interesting information, and well-made pull outs. I suggest this book as a gift to someone who's got a kid on the way, or already has a baby about to reach those exciting toddler years. As a former kindergarten teacher, it was a fun read that also made sense of some of the interesting behaviors of that age.
