Many years ago I managed a firm where I began calling my colleagues, "my kids." This moniker was descriptive of both my affection for them and their childish behavior toward work and each other.

Now Nick McCormick has captured a wonderful collection of the childish things people do at work. Or... I should say... the clever and common things people do at work, which are, in fact, quite childish.

It's called, Acting Up Brings Everyone Down: The Impacts of Childish Behavior in the Workplace.

"The purpose of this book is to point out the silliness that we engage in at work in hopes that readers will acknowledge their actions, realize there are better and more constructive ways to act, and make the necessary changes to improve the work environment."

Nick McCormick's wonderful new book addresses the issue of unproductive individual behavior in the workplace in a manner that engagingly and comprehensively meets the needs of both managers and the rest of us. Moreover, Nick introduces, illustrates, and presents the problem as more than just the product of inherently bad actors, but - potentially, at least - of all of us in our weaker or less thoughtful moments.

Using, as he did in his previous book Lead Well and Prosper, the characters of "Joe," "Wanda," and others from his blog, Nick walks us through a series of common negative - childish, even - behaviors we all will confess we are sometimes tempted to succumb to in various aspects of our lives. He then offers unmistakable elaborations and illustrations of not only how these temptations are problematic at work, but of how we all are vulnerable to exhibiting them there at one time or another. Having established what these examples are together with our individual relationships to them, each is then followed with refreshingly clear and frank advice and recommendations.

The treatment is friendly, honest, and inescapably engaging. The kind of thing that you need your mentor to tell you

It's a very positive book, and, I think, better than his last one, Lead Well and Prosper: 15 Successful Strategies for Becoming a Good Manager. Wanda and Joe, the lead characters in Lead Well, are back, but this book is less story and more guide. This makes it easier to read, as the characters aren't getting in the way of the advice.

This is the kind of thing that you need your mentor to tell you, because no one else will own up to the fact this type of behaviour goes on. A lot of it is common sense, but sometimes we need a kick to assess whether we actually behave in this way.

Throughout the last three decades of his life, Nobel-Prize winning physicist William Shockley (1910 - 1989) was a highly controversial figure. Not because of his pioneer works in electronics, which were one of the foundations for the rise of the Silicon Valley companies and their technological progress and commercial success, but because of his views about the danger of declining cognitive capabilities in the United States. Convinced of the mainly hereditary origin of intelligence differences, Shockley saw a clear dysgenic trend in Western societies and publicly talked and wrote about the causes and possible remedies of this development. The most important of his articles about these topics can be found in "Shockley on Eugenics and Race". These essays demonstrate that Shockley wasn't motivated by racial oder elitist prejudices, but by certain facts and serious concern about the future of Western civilization. Shockley's articles with such provoking titles as "Society has a Moral Obligation to Diagnose Tragic Racial IQ Deficits" or " Has Intellectual Humanitarianism Gone Berserk?" are no scientific papers about cognitive psychology, behavioral genetics or the social implications of eugenics, but nevertheless interesting statements of a highly intelligent outsider in these fields, in a debate which isn't finished. The most interesting parts of the book are a lengthy "Preface" of the eminent psychologist Arthur R. Jensen, who thinks of W. B. Shockley as "a truly genius" (which doesn't mean that Jensen's "Preface" is an uncritical eulogy), the very informative "Introduction" of the editor Roger Pearson with many biographical details about Shockley and the political-ideological background of his activities, and finally, last but not least, the "Playboy"-Interview with Professor Shockley in August 1980. In that interview Shockley tells the reader for example - among other details of his biography (one of the most controversial themes: Shockley's famous participation in an elite sperm bank), his political and ideological opinions - that he himself was not tested as an extreme bright kid in the seminal longitudinal study of Stanford psychologist Lewis M. Terman - the young Shockley did not belong to the Top One Percent of Californian school-children. This really strange result should be one of many reasons to remain cautious in matters of IQ and society, more cautious than the courageous electronic engineer and physicist Shockley was.

Genius and heroic champion of humanity

William Shockley basically started silicon valley. He was a monumental genius in many ways. More importantly, he worked tirelessly for the future of genius and the future of all children on Earth who might benefit from the inventions and blessings of genius. These are precarious things which can evaporate overnight if we are not careful. No charity, nothing you can possibly do, can have more lasting and beneficial impact on society than what Shockley was trying to enlighten the world about. Some people just are not corruptible. They love truth and will stick to it. The habitat of truth is minds like Shockleys... I don't want to live in a world without them. Neither do you. See "The Textbook of the Universe: The Genetic Ascent to God" to see the absolute necessity of these ideas, and how the very revolution which Shockleys transistor started may simply be part of a larger gearing-up of humanity towards taking control of our own genetics -- which makes Shockleys 2 main contributions to humanity go together perfectly! These writings should be required reading in high school and college. EVERYONE who cares about the future should read this book.

Quite reminiscent of the movie "A few good men" where it is said, "You don't want the truth, because you can't handle the truth"... Facts are facts... Wherever they lead... however we remain consumed with, Let's pretend. And data as these are never allowed voice in colleges or in media... We continue to perpetrate the hoax, "We are the same" & we are NOT... WE are similar, yet different.

Engaging and Humorous Story

Kristi Ann Hunter has an engaging voice, drawing the reader in to the Regency-era "A Noble Masquerade" with her unique mix of humor and suspense. In fact, I found myself laughing out loud in sections of the story. Although the tone changes partway through, the story continued to draw me in.

I thoroughly enjoyed the well-developed characters and plot! Lady Miranda, fighting against her engrained societal concerns and proper manners, is believable and easy to empathize with. Although readers guess the hidden truths in the plot before the charming protagonist, we are still engaged in watching her discovery process. Unlike some other Regency novels, the ensuing relationship is true to life while the author focuses on maintaining a clean story line.

Each of the sumptuous settings throughout the story added to the richness of the world surrounding Lady Miranda – from the rolling English countryside to the busy streets of London to the family’s lavishly decorated country estate.

Looking forward to the next one in the series! If you haven’t found her kindle prequel to this one, you are in for a treat. I read "A Lady of Esteem" first to avoid spoilers found in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Clean, beautifully constructed regency

A Noble Masquerade is the first in a series about the Hawthorne siblings set in regency England.
First, let me say that I adored this book! It has been a while since I found a new author who I could rave about to my fellow book-loving friends. Kristi Ann Hunter delivers a thrilling story full of intrigue, unexpected surprises, a most importantly, an engaging and clean romance.
I don't want to give too much away, so I'll only mention this: I loved the letter-writing element....
Hunter offers a free novella prequel to this story called A Lady of Esteem. It is a fun introduction to the Hawthorne family.
I highly recommend you give A Noble Masquerade a try--I guarantee you'll enjoy it!

Oh. My. Goodness! This book is SO good. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. The main characters are very well written and so much fun. I absolutely love that Rayland, the British spy for King George, takes on the persona of Marlow. What a fun nod to Christopher Marlowe! I am so sad this book is done, but SO glad this author has more books for me to devour!!! Such a great author.
