Faculty praised each of the previous six editions of Howard Abadinsky's clear, comprehensive overview of the US legal system. His latest edition Law, Courts, and Justice in America (previously Law and Justice) represents a refined, updated synthesis of the complex, fluid justice system in the United States.

Part I (Law) describes the history of the US justice system and the emergence of law schools; the realities of a law school education; and the current state of the legal profession for both women and men. Part II (Courts) unravels the structure of federal and state court systems, delineating differences between constitutional and legislative courts and between trial and appellate courts; the structure and purpose of appellate courts; and the Supreme Court, noting variations in the interpretation of statutes, the Constitution, and the original intent of legislators; and the roles of judges, prosecutors, and attorneys. Part III (Justice) demystifies the criminal, civil, and juvenile judicial processes; plea-bargaining and the controversies surrounding it; and adjudication options outside of traditional, adversarial legal venues.

Throughout, landmark cases, important historical events, illustrative examples, and boxed items highlight or expand chapter content. Not-for-sale instructor resource material available to college and university faculty only; contact publisher directly.

Review
"Great text for beginning law students the best on the market." --Richard Poland, Flagler College

"Excellent text. Accessible, yet detailed. Written to the student audience yet sophisticated enough for use in high-level academic work. I very much enjoyed Abadinsky's approach to describing the relationship between politics and justice, something often overlooked in other texts. This is well done." --Colin Glennon, East Tennessee State University

"I like the fact that this is offered as a paperback, thereby making it more affordable for students. The content is perfect for the first half of my jurisprudence class." --Mark Fierro, Fairleigh Dickinson University

Following an assignment which leaves him disillusioned by his brutal career, and oblivious to what he knows, Daniel retires to his newly purchased farm in Buckhorn Abbas to live in peace. Leaving his brother, James, to run Temple Stamford, the prosperous and successful company their father left behind when he died, Daniel starts a normal life and a romance with psychology lecturer Caroline Ranger. All seems calm, until his life is shattered by Salim Oma Asgari and the assassination squad hired by Abbas Abdul Malik, the multi-billionaire owner of AAM industries. A drugs lord, arms dealer and owner of one the world's largest private arts and antiquities collections, Malik's legitimate businesses earn him billions - his criminal operations even more. His only weakness is the witness to the one illegal transaction that leads straight to him. His only option is to protect himself, kill Daniel Temple, and those around him. Cracking Read
By Mazerati
I wouldn't say I'm an enthusiastic book reader, and this one was a bit of "punt", so I was really surprised how good it was. No more to say really, so as not to spoil it, but I'm looking around for more, from this author.

Kabul Gold - a precious metal of a first novel
By Exceedus1
Amazingly, this is Darren Rodell's first novel and introduces the credible and likeable hero, Daniel Temple, an ex-SAS captain who is forced out of a short retirement to seek and destroy an evil empire and its leader.

If you enjoy fast-paced, action and adventure stories then I can strongly recommend this book. I managed to get through it in two sittings which speaks volumes for its storyline and the need to find out 'what happens next'.

I hope this book does really well; it deserves to and I'm already looking forward to the next Dan Temple adventure.

Cracking book
By Lady Jane
Despite never having read an adventure novel before, I was hooked right from the start. The characters are easy to relate to and the action packed storyline keeps you turning the pages in anticipation of the next suspenseful moment.

I found myself torn between wanting to know what happens next and not wanting to finish the book because I was enjoying it so much.

A cracking book. Can't wait to read the next Dan Temple adventure.

Useful but beware
By Jeff
I use these Code Checks constantly as a quick easy reference to navigate through the numerous, often confusing and misleading, codes. But it's important that a contractor or homeowner know that they are using the latest or applicable code version. I find it sad that the author does not tell you on the cover or in the description, which version of each code this book covers so I will provide that information here.
From the Code Check web site this book covers:
2009 International Residential Code
2011 National Electrical Code
2009 Uniform Plumbing & Mechanical Codes
2009 ISPDE International Private Sewage Disposal Code
2009 Uniform Mechanical Code
2009 NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code
2011 NFPA Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code
2010 ASHRAE 62.2 Ventiation & Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings
2010 NFPA 211 Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents & Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances
2011 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code

I also think the publisher should sell updated sections when that appropriate code is updated. I have contacted them and they do not offer updates so you may be better off buying the individual Code Check books and replacing each when the new code is out.

it is not complete as the title suggests
By sactown diyer
It is a good book but, it frequently refers you back to the main code check book for the service you are working on e.g. in plumbing it will refer you to the code check plumbing book for complete information. had I to do over again I would buy the individual books.

Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes
By Edward Pohlman
This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.

Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.

It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.

I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.

An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.

The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.

The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.

One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.

It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.

One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.

Who says that you can’t learn from the games of amateurs? Renowned chess instructor and writer Dan Heisman presents thirty games by intermediate-level players, each one offering a rich variety of lessons in practical competitive play for all chess enthusiasts.

The catalog of errors runs the gamut from taking too much (or too little!) time to think, to shoddy calculation, cutting off analysis too soon, and ignoring the principles of sound strategy. Using gentle humor, Coach Heisman gives a blow-by-blow account and patiently dissects the players’ thinking process, offering tips for improving clock management and making better decisions at the board.

Because the advantage can swing wildly back and forth, amateur games can be entertaining as well as instructive. Heisman gives a choice selection of cases of chess suicide, for the purpose of suggesting what the victim could have done to prevent disaster. Learn from this – better them than you!

Fun & Instructive
By Joseph D. Phelps
One of the most enjoyable game collections I have ever read. I think it is probably more deserving of 4.5 stars but Amazon dosen't allow that. These games are not only fun to play over but Mr. Heisman's insightful comments are very instructive, not to mention that some of them hit uncomfortably close to home for a class player like myself.

I enjoyed Dan's coverage of less-than-optimal openings like the so-called "High School" version of the Sicilian Defense (1.e4 c5 2. Bc4) which at my level (1500-1600), I see constantly. Some might find it annoying but I liked his constant reminders to "try to take all your time in every game" & "If you see a good move, dont play it immediately, look for a better one" etc.... Some people might find this type of repeated advice to be demeaning but it is exactly the kind of thing I struggle with when playing serious chess.

Dan did a very good job of explaining why the players made their mistakes (playing to fast, not taking into account all their opponent's replys, etc...). He also used a good mixture of prose and analysis when exploring alternate variations (although I would have like to have seen a few less "houdini prefers").

I believe it is very important for people to pick out chess books that are neither too advanced or too simplistic for their skill level. Saying that, I would highly recommend this book for anyone in the 1000 to 1800 ratings range. I believe they would get much more out of it than buying another opening book or trying to digest the latest Kasparov tome aimed at Master's and above.

Kudo's to Mr. Heisman on this book, I will definitely buy any other game collection he writes.

Another excellent book from NM Dan Heisman
By Chris P
There are a few chess authors whose books I will buy no questions asked. National Master Dan Heisman is one of those authors. Soltis, Nunn and Silman are the others for those curious. I've actually had the privilege of taking a few lessons from Dan Heisman, but unfortunately had to stop due to scheduling issues on my end. Being a graduate student at UNLV does not leave too much time for chess unfortunately. However, I hope to start up my lessons again over winter break as my finals just ended. Total tangent, but if you are serious about improving your chess I cannot recommend lessons highly enough. I had a few light bulbs go off during my lessons with Dan Heisman that have helped me tremendously, particularly in the area of analysis.

Okay, how about the book? As mentioned earlier, with my finals over I dove straight in to not only my regular chess studying (tactics, going over annotated master games, and playing slow games), but also to this book. The book is a collection of amateur games with fantastic annotations by Heisman. Each game is given dense annotation and grouped by general theme. Some are under the theme of moving too fast, while others are examples of the player(s) moving too slow. The thing that makes this book a must buy, especially if you are serious about improving your chess, is all the pearls of wisdom Heisman sprinkles in during each game. Advice on general principles, advice on analysis, advice on evaluation, advice on openings, advice on pretty much every aspect of chess. The other great thing about the book is the games are highly entertaining. Going over well-annotated Grandmaster games is one of the best thing you can do for your chess, but you hardly ever see a major blunder in those games (Anand in the recent London Chess Classic notwithstanding). Amateur games are exciting because there are often wild swings in the game and the winning side changes frequently. It is the chess us mere mortals play and highly educational in its own way, especially because these players make the same mistakes we do. Another great thing about Heisman's writing is the humor he adds to the annotations. In one of the early games he mentions that on a particular move a player who was playing lightning fast (the game was time stamped) actually took a couple of minutes for a move because he probably got a drink of water and/or a snack. Let's be honest, chess books can be dry affairs so this type of humor is a great addition.

Whether you are an improving player or simply play chess for fun, this book is a must buy.

I Don't Want You to Buy This Book (I Won't Beat You as Easily!)
By Nimzo
Proviso: I am an amateur chess enthusiast and intermediate level player who knows Coach Heisman personally from being a sometime member of his local chess club. I have benefited greatly from the group instruction he provides at the club, and on various online sources. I am not in any way a close friend of Heisman's and feel that I am an objective commentator on the value he brings to chess students. I am an on-and-off member of the USCF but I mostly play chess on the 'net these days.

So why don't I want you to buy this book? First who are "you"? If you are an intermediate or advancing beginner chess player, then I'm talking to you. You are the person I wind up playing against in an over the board tournament game (rare for me these days) or on a live chess game on the internet (I highly recommend Chess.com for live, real-time chess play - I'm not affiliated with them, just a member). You have probably made many of the errors and inaccuracies so instructively laid out for the reader in Heisman's newest book. In fact, you'll probably make many of these errors in your games against me (I see them all the time). When you make these errors, I tend to win more games (winning makes me happy). And you may keep on making these errors unless you pay attention to the lessons provided here by Coach Heisman.

What kind of things will you learn by reading this book and playing through the games, either in your head and using the diagrams (as I do), or over a study board? You'll learn about time management from someone who understands the trouble that players get into either from moving too slowly or too quickly. You'll learn about how to handle many common opening patterns and sequences that arise in less-than-grandmasterly games. You'll learn some helpful endgame themes. You'll learn a variety of instructive rules of thumb that can get you through your games with more wins than losses. This is decades of chess wisdom distilled at precisely the correct concentration for the chess amateur who wants to improve his game. Do you know what a "two way bishop" is? Do you know what the correct relative values of the pieces are in various circumstances, and how that should influence the way you trade pieces in those circumstances? Do you know what a counting error is? Do you know what a quiescence error is? Do you know the difference between Hope Chess and Real Chess? Can you judge when it's worth investing a lot of time and thought in a move, and when it's not? Do you know when it makes sense to trade rooks in an endgame? You will learn about all of these things and many more if you read and study this book. And if you pay attention to what you read, I won't beat you as often.

Heisman makes use of computer analysis to improve and perfect his analysis of the games in this book. Some people don't like that, saying "well, I could use a computer too - who needs this?" Those people are foolish and they miss the point. When you combine computer analysis with the kind of deep chess insight and wisdom proffered by Coach Heisman, you get a very effective combination - and with none of the annoying and dangerous errors that used to creep into books even written by grandmasters (and world champions) before the age of wide-spread computer analysis.

Heisman's chess wisdom has been captured in many articles on the 'net, and he gives zillions of links to these helpful articles in the book. He also posts instructive videos and blogs on the ICC and on Chess.com. But if you are a chess amateur and you want a book of games you can play through and learn dozens of important lessons and heuristics to improve your play, this book will be worth its price. You are not a master, and like most of us probably never will be, so this book represents a guide to the kind of games you'll most often find yourself in in real life.

I've said many complementary things about this book. So why don't I give it five stars? Well, I am a bit frugal with my praise. I don't like to gush all over everything I like. This is a great little chess book. Is it destined to be a classic for the ages as Bronstein's book on Zurich 1953 has become? No. Also I would say that it could benefit from more diagrams. How expensive is it to insert diagrams into books these days? I'd like to have one at every single point of interest in the game - but mainly because I tend to read chess books away from a chess board. But for an amateur player who wants to improve his game, it well worth investing the money to buy, and the time to read, this very instructive, humorous, and entertaining book. Plus, if I gave it 5 stars, then there'd be an even greater chance you'd buy it and again - I don't want you to do that. ;-)

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1), by George R. R. Martin

NOW THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES

From a master of contemporary fantasy comes the first novel of a landmark series unlike any you’ve ever read before. With A Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin has launched a genuine masterpiece, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill the pages of this magnificent saga, the first volume in an epic series sure to delight fantasy fans everywhere.

A GAME OF THRONES
A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK ONE

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. To the south, the king’s powers are failing—his most trusted adviser dead under mysterious circumstances and his enemies emerging from the shadows of the throne. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the frozen land they were born to. Now Lord Eddard Stark is reluctantly summoned to serve as the king’s new Hand, an appointment that threatens to sunder not only his family but the kingdom itself.

Sweeping from a harsh land of cold to a summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, A Game of Thrones tells a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; a child is lost in the twilight between life and death; and a determined woman undertakes a treacherous journey to protect all she holds dear. Amid plots and counter-plots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, allies and enemies, the fate of the Starks hangs perilously in the balance, as each side endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Unparalleled in scope and execution, A Game of Thrones is one of those rare reading experiences that catch you up from the opening pages, won’t let you go until the end, and leave you yearning for more.

Amazon.com Review
Readers of epic fantasy series are: (1) patient--they are left in suspense between each volume, (2) persistent--they reread or at least review the previous book(s) when a new installment comes out, (3) strong--these 700-page doorstoppers are heavy, and (4) mentally agile--they follow a host of characters through a myriad of subplots. In A Game of Thrones, the first book of a projected six, George R.R. Martin rewards readers with a vividly real world, well-drawn characters, complex but coherent plotting, and beautifully constructed prose, which Locus called "well above the norms of the genre."

Martin's Seven Kingdoms resemble England during the Wars of the Roses, with the Stark and Lannister families standing in for the Yorks and Lancasters. The story of these two families and their struggle to control the Iron Throne dominates the foreground; in the background is a huge, ancient wall marking the northern border, beyond which barbarians, ice vampires, and direwolves menace the south as years-long winter advances. Abroad, a dragon princess lives among horse nomads and dreams of fiery reconquest.

There is much bloodshed, cruelty, and death, but A Game of Thrones is nevertheless compelling; it garnered a Nebula nomination and won the 1996 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel. So, on to A Clash of Kings! --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly
In a world where the approaching winter will last four decades, kings and queens, knights and renegades struggle for control of a throne. Some fight with sword and mace, others with magic and poison. Beyond the Wall to the north, meanwhile, the Others are preparing their army of the dead to march south as the warmth of summer drains from the land. After more than a decade devoted primarily to TV and screen work, Martin (The Armageddon Rag, 1983) makes a triumphant return to high fantasy with this extraordinarily rich new novel, the first of a trilogy. Although conventional in form, the book stands out from similar work by Eddings, Brooks and others by virtue of its superbly developed characters, accomplished prose and sheer bloody-mindedness. Although the romance of chivalry is central to the culture of the Seven Kingdoms, and tournaments, derring-do and handsome knights abound, these trappings merely give cover to dangerous men and women who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. When Lord Stark of Winterfell, an honest man, comes south to act as the King's chief councilor, no amount of heroism or good intentions can keep the realm under control. It is fascinating to watch Martin's characters mature and grow, particularly Stark's children, who stand at the center of the book. Martin's trophy case is already stuffed with major prizes, including Hugos, Nebulas, Locus Awards and a Bram Stoker. He's probably going to have to add another shelf, at least. Major ad/promo.

Well plotted and paced; excellent, fresh fantasy tale
By MISTER SJEM
First off, I'm a heavy duty fan of GRRM. I've read over a 100 different fantasy authors in my time (started at 12; I'm now 32). Took about 5 years off from the genre b/c I felt it was all getting too formulaic and cliched.
So, when I came back to fantasy at the end of 1999, I read the usual: Goodkind, Jordan, etc. and then someone told me about GRRM and man, that was the kicker!
Here are the reasons to choose GRRM. I've also listed the reasons not to choose him to make it fair b/c I know their are certain personalities who won't like this series:
WHY TO READ GRRM
(1) YOU ARE TIRED OF FORMULAIC FANTASY: good lad beats the dark lord against impossible odds; boy is the epitome of good; he and all his friends never die even though they go through great dangers . . . the good and noble king; the beautiful princess who falls in love with the commoner boy even though their stations are drastically different . . . you get the idea. After reading this over and over, it gets old.
(2) YOU ARE TIRED OF ALL THE HEROES STAYING ALIVE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE UNDER CONSTANT DANGER: this gets even worse where the author kills a main hero off but that person comes back later in the story. Or, a hero does die but magic brings him back.
This sometimes carries to minor characters where even they may not die, but most fantasy authors like to kill them off to show that some risked the adventure and perished.
(3) YOU ARE A MEDIEVAL HISTORY BUFF: this story was influenced by the WARS OF THE ROSES and THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR.
(4) YOU LOVE SERIOUS INTRIGUE WITHOUT STUPID OPPONENTS: lots of layering; lots of intrigue; lots of clever players in the game of thrones. Unlike other fantasy novels, one side, usually the villain, is stupid or not too bright.
(5) YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BIASED OPINIONS AND DIFFERENT TRUTHS: GRRM has set this up where each chapter has the title of one character and the whole chapter is through their viewpoint. Interesting tidbit is that you get their perception of events or truths. But, if you pay attention, someone else will mention a different angle of truth in the story that we rarely see in other novels. Lastly and most importantly, GRRM doesn't try to tell us which person is right in their perception. He purposelly leaves it vague so that we are kept guessing.
(6) LEGENDS: some of the most interesting characters are those who are long gone or dead. We never get the entire story but only bits and pieces; something that other fantasy authors could learn from to heighten suspense. Additionally, b/c the points of views are not congruent, we sometimes get different opinions.
(7) WORDPLAY: if you're big on metaphors and description, GRRM is your guy. Almost flawless flow.
(8) LOTS OF CONFLICT: all types, too; not just fighting but between characters through threats and intrigue.
(9) MULTILAYERED PLOTTING; SUB PLOTS GALORE: each character has their own separate storyline; especially as the story continues and everyone gets scattered. This is one of the reasons why each novel is between 700-900 pages.
(10) SUPERLATIVE VARIED CHARACTERS: not the typical archetypes that we are used to in most fantasy; some are gritty; few are totally evil or good; GRRM does a great job of changing our opinions of characters as the series progress. This is especially true of Jaime in book three.
(11) REALISTIC MEDIEVAL DIALOGUE: not to the point that we can't understand it but well done.
(12) HEAPS OF SYMOBLISM AND PROPHECY: if you're big on that.
(13) EXCELLENT MYSTERIES: very hard to figure out the culprits; GRRM must have read a lot of mystery novels.
(14) RICHLY TEXTURED FEMALE CHARACTERS: best male author on female characters I have read; realistic on how women think, too.
(15) LOW MAGIC WORLD: magic is low key; not over the top so heroes can't get out of jams with it.
REASON TO NOT READ GRRM
(1) YOU LIKE YOUR MAIN CHARACTERS: GRRM does a good job of creating more likeable characters after a few die. But, if that isn't your style, you shouldn't be reading it. He kills off several, not just one, so be warned.
(2) DO NOT CARE FOR GRITTY GRAY CHARACTERS: if you like more white and gray characters, this may unsettle you. I suggest Feist or Goodkind or Dragonlance if you want a more straight forward story with strong archetypes.
(3) MULTIPLE POINTS OF VIEWS TURN YOU OFF: if you prefer that the POVS only go to a few characters, this might be confusing for you.
(4) SWEARING, SEX: there's a lot of it in this book just as there is in real life.
(5) YOU DEMAND CLOSURE AT THE END OF EVERY BOOK: this isn't the case for all stories in the series. Some are still going on; some have been resolved; others have been created and are moving on.
(6) IF YOU WANT A TARGET OR SOMEONE TO BLAME: this can be done to some extent but not as much. This is b/c he doesn't try to make anyone necessarily good or evil.
(7) ARCHETYPES: some readers like archetypal characters because it's comfortable; we like the good young hero (sort of like Pug in Feist's THE RIFTWAR SAGA); it's familiar and we sometimes like to pretend we're this upcoming, great hero. You wont' get much of this in GRRM with the exception of one or two characters.
(8) LENGTH: you don't want to get into a long fantasy epic series. In that case, look for shorters works as this is biiig.
(9) PATRIARCHY: men are most of the main characters with lots of power (one female exception). ....

Kindle editing - AARRRGGGHHHH!
By triquestral
NB: THIS REVIEW REFERS TO THE KINDLE EDITION ALONE! This is a great book, and I've eaten up the series and have been on tenterhooks for George RR to get his finger out and publish A Dance with Dragons for YEARS now. (And the tv series!! Be still my beating heart!!!) But I have to comment on the extremely bad editing of the Kindle edition of A Game of Thrones. It is sloppy and unprofessional. When I first got my kindle, I never experienced this, but now it seems like every book gets worse and worse. I thought Sacajawea was bad, but A Game of Thrones starts out with poor editing and gets progressively more appalling as you get further into the book. People who only read the kindle edition will think that Princess Elia comes from Dome, since that is how it is (almost) consistently spelled throughout the book. (It's Dorne). But on the other hand, the `tom cat' is a `torn cat'- go figure. Little things like that at first, but now, in the last third of the book, the mistakes are coming on nearly every page. Random parentheses, inappropriately capitalized words, italics that make no sense, sentences that end abruptly - that kind of thing. It would be irritating, but something I would just accept in a free edition of a book (maybe). But for a Kindle book that costs more than the paperback, I expect more. I also own a hard copy of this book, and none of these typos are in that edition. I'm not sure how the Kindle editions are made, but I expect the same kind of professional editing that you get in print books. You don't get that here, disappointingly.

Exceeded my wildest expectations...and I expect a *lot*.
By Jacob G Corbin
I see where a reviewer below faulted A GAME OF THRONES for being so chock-full of "tragedy, bloodshed, cruelty, death, rape, incest, drunkeness, murder, (and) infanticide."
Heh. Where I come from, that's a five-star recommendation.
Glibness aside, the person has a point. A GAME OF THRONES is indeed a graphic, viciously unsentimental novel. It features all the offenses listed above and more besides. It revels in them.
Can't you people see? That's the *point.*
The writers of heroic fantasy like to write about huge and epic struggles between capital-letter Good and Evil. Yet over and over again they demonstrate only the most puerile understanding of what good and evil actually are. In their blinkered, constrained little worlds, "evil" consists of sitting in a dank tower all day sending orcs or demons or what-have-you after the Crampon of Justice or some similarly-named hogwash artifact. Not even the darkest of their generic Dark Lords would be caught boffing his own sister or murdering a child (much less get away with it), and in that fundamentally nonsensical bit of characterization lies the crux of their problem: by sticking horns and a lightning staff onto a one-dimensional pulp villain and calling it Ultimate Evil, they cheapen and debase *real* good and evil.
I'm sure most of these writers realize this perfectly well; the problem is that they're writing to one of the most idiotically attenuated audiences on the face of the planet, people who really want to read the same book over and over ad infinitum with just enough variation from the template to create the illusion of difference. It's a sad state of affairs when we consider that fantasy, which should rightly be the domain of myth, wonder, and what Warren Ellis calls "mad, beautiful ideas," is the second most rigidly unimaginative genre out there (right behind romance, with whom it shares more than a few readers and tropes).
The "Song of Ice and Fire" series is a show-stopping six volume call to arms against this nonsense. Readers who come to the novels expecting another eminently predictable generic quest might be lulled to quiescence in the first few innocuous chapters, but will awake - sooner or later - to the unsettling realization that they're playing George R.R. Martin's game now. In A GAME OF THRONES, he systematically slaughters every sacred cow of "heroic fantasy" and, in so doing, injects a vigor and a zest for life and the written word into the genre that hasn't been seen since the beautiful insanity of Tolkien. Heroes die and villains turn out to be not so bad after all. Magic appears only very rarely, making it infinitely more interesting. The plot steadfastly refuses to go where you'd expect. And lest you purists think that Martin holds fantasy in contempt, consider this: unlike practically every other fantasy writer out there, he's gone to the trouble of writing this novel as if it were the most serious literature: his characters and their motivations are fully fleshed out (Eddard Stark and Tyrion Lannister are especially well-done), his prose is exciting and full of witty and lovely turns of phrase, and his themes are complex and multilayered. In other words, he's actually assumed that his readership is *intelligent.*
After reading this and China Meiville's PERDIDO STREET STATION, I have renewed hope for the future of fantasy. Works like these deserve to be read, reread, and passed to friends; they yank the genre - and its readers - out of bed and lead it blinking and cursing into the light of genuine literary merit.

Chapter One

Betty Considine shaded her eyes when she saw the rider coming through the gate. Accustomed to the movements of horses and men, she noted the weary, shuffling trot of the pony as it crossed the baked clay of the compound toward the Headquarters building.

The rider was unshaven, and the dark hair curled around his ears and over the collar of his sun-bleached shirt. When he swung down she noted the gun hung low, the narrow hips, and the powerful shoulders. His hat brim was ragged, and there was a bullet hole through the crown.

When he was a few paces from her she could clearly see the line of an old scar on his cheekbone. His lean brown face was haggard, and in his eyes there was the daze of a dreadful weariness. On the collar and shoulder of his faded blue shirt was a dark stain of dried blood.

Pulling his hat from his head, he slapped it against his thigh in an ineffectual effort to free it of dust, and the attempt caused him to stagger, so that he half fell against the hitch rail.

She ran to him and put her hand on his shoulder. "Are you hurt?" she asked quickly. "What's the matter?"

The face he turned to her was etched with lines of exhaustion, and was gray under the tan. "I'll be all right. Thank you."

He smelled strongly of stale sweat, dust, and the horse, and he gathered himself with a visible effort. Even in his exhausted state there was a faint swagger in his bearing.

"Who's commanding?" he asked.

"The adjutant, Major Paddock."

He had started to turn away, but at the name his shoulders seemed to hunch as from a blow. He looked back at her, the glaze of weariness gone from his eyes. "You said Paddock. Not Frank Bell Paddock?"

"Yes. Do you know him?"

He stared at the compound as if seeing it for the first time. Squinting against the white-hot glare of the desert sun, he looked around the rectangle of shabby adobes that made up the tiny post. Officers' quarters, adjutant's office, sutler's store, the post bakery, commissary quartermaster stores, blacksmith shop, corrals, and stables.

Everywhere was heat, dust, and the glare of the pitiless sun. "My God!" he said softly. "Frank Bell Paddock!"

He opened the door of the Headquarters building and disappeared inside.

Betty Considine was Army. The only daughter of General Pat Considine, and a niece of Carter Hanlon, captain and army surgeon, she had grown up to Regulations. Having lived on a dozen army posts, after her father's death she had gone to live with her aunt and uncle. She was familiar with army gossip and she knew, as they all did, the story of Major Frank Bell Paddock.

If this stranger was shocked at the presence of Major Paddock at this remote post he must have known Paddock in the past, but not during the years immediately behind him. There had been a time when Paddock was considered one of the most promising young officers in the post-war Army, and one with an assured future.

Since that time his decline had been consistent, but the only other consistent thing about Paddock was his addiction to the bottle. Finally he had come here, only a year ago, to this new and temporary fort, one of the most isolated in the country.

Her curiosity aroused, Betty Considine paused in the shade of the overhang outside the sutler's store.

Uninterested in any man on the post or elsewhere, Betty was intrigued by this disreputable-looking stranger who had known Frank Bell Paddock in the days of his glory.

If this man had known Paddock, he must have known him back east, or in Europe, yet a more typical western man she had never seen. But he might have been Army . . . even if he did not look it now.

The life of Major Frank Bell Paddock was an open book up to a point, but Something had happened in Paris.

Captain Paddock had been a military attache at the American embassy in Paris, a handsome, athletic young officer, admired by his superiors. There he had met and married Denise de Caslou, a famous beauty, of the old nobility. She came of a family of little wealth but one known for the long line of soldiers and men of the sea, men of bravery and distinction.

Whatever it was that happened had occurred only a year after their marriage, and with it began the decline and fall of Frank Bell Paddock.

Suddenly relieved of duty in Paris, he had been returned to the States, and after several brief stays at various posts, he was sent to a remote fort in Dakota, and then to Montana.

Now, at the end of the long road down, Major Frank Bell Paddock was adjutant of a post with only four troops of cavalry, all of them under strength. Always mildly under the influence of alcohol, he was never trusted with a field command. Promotion was something for which he could no longer hope, and he was merely living out the years until he could retire on a pension. But those years stretched far ahead for Paddock, who was not yet forty.

This was the man Barney Kilrone faced as he stepped past the company clerk and into the office beyond. The once fine features of the officer he remembered had coarsened into heaviness, and there was a premature graying. Most of all, there was an air of resignation, of hopelessness about the man. When Paddock looked up, his expression hardened into anger as he recognized Kilrone.

"So—" It was almost a sigh. "It is you again."

"On business, Pad, very ugly business. I Troop is

gone . . . wiped out. The Bannocks hit them from ambush over on the Little Owyhee."

Major Paddock dropped his eyes to the now meaningless papers on the desk. Nineteen men . . . and the prisoners, if any, worse off than the dead. If any had gotten away they were now being hunted down like rats in a cornfield.

"Colonel Webb?"

"I wouldn't know him by sight, Pad, and identification would have been impossible anyway."

Paddock's brain, dulled by whiskey and long hours of paper work, refused to fit himself into the new picture. Something must be done. . . .

There were two problems here, one military and the other personal. The man who had wrecked his life was facing him now, his very presence proof that the years of expectancy had not been in vain. He had come at last, and when he left he would take with him all worthwhile in life that remained to the dashing young officer that had been Frank Bell Paddock.

"You've come for Denise?"

"Don't be a fool, Pad!" Impatience drove through his exhaustion. "She loves you. She always did. She's your wife."

"She has been loyal, I grant you, Barney. She has been . . . what is it the French say? Correct? But she's been in love with you."

He sat back in his chair. "She's more beautiful than ever, Barney; and now you've come to take her away, as I knew you would."

"Pad, for God's sake, forget it! I didn't even know you were in this part of the country until a girl outside told me just now. I've been moving, Pad. I haven't thought of Denise in years, and I am sure she hasn't thought of me."

The minutes ticked by; a fly buzzed against the window, struggling to escape the heavy air of the hot, close room. It was Barnes Kilrone who broke the silence. "Pad, you're in command. This is your problem . . . all of it."

"Command?" The word carried a shock that penetrated Paddock's cocoon of self-pity.

Command? What did one do with three troops? Three? . . .

"My God!" He came to his feet, his face drawn and bloodless. "M Troop . . . they were to rendezvous with I Troop on the North Fork!"

Barney Kilrone held himself up by the edge of the desk, and his brain struggled against fatigue, for he was all in. He thought of M Troop riding across country, a tired lot of men, riding to a meeting with a company of the vanquished, a company of the dead . . . and who would keep that rendezvous?

The Bannocks!

Discipline, the habit of soldiering, began to shape its pattern in the mind of Major Frank Paddock. His thoughts began to take formation. He had no plan, of course, to meet this eventuality, but he knew the things to be considered, the responsibilities that were his. M Troop must be warned . . . somehow.

Two troops remained on the post, two troops comprising just seventy-two effectives, and the whole Bannock operation might be directed toward a piecemeal destruction of the garrison at the post. The Bannocks, led by a shrewd and careful fighter, had ambushed I Troop before they could effect the meeting with M Troop.

With the first troop destroyed, Medicine Dog could now move to ambush the second. If he was aware the post had been warned he would expect a relief force to come . . . and trust him to know just how many soldiers remained of the post complement, and how many could be spared to leave the fort. And how pitifully few would remain.

"It's the post he wants," Paddock said aloud. "He wants the ammunition, the guns, the food, and the horses. If he could draw enough of us away from the post he could strike here. . . ."

He broke off, and his eyes turned to Kilrone. "Barney, how did you get here? Were you seen?"

"If I'd been seen I wouldn't be here. Unless they return to the scene of the fight and see my tracks around, they can't know."

"Unless they let you come on purpose to draw another troop away from the post." He sank back into his chair.

It was time for a decision, and Frank Paddock had no decision. He needed time . . . time. Everything would depend on what he decided. If the troop he sent to the relief of M Troop was caught before it could effect a meeting and was itself destroyed, then the post would be helpless before such an attack as the Bannocks could mount.

For the first time he became aware of the condition of the man across the desk. At once he was on his feet. "Come on, Barney—you're all in. Come to my quarters."

Kilrone held back. "Take me to the barracks. To the stables . . . not to your quarters."

"Now you're being the fool." Paddock took Kilrone's arm. In a way, he thought, it would be better to have it over. After all the years of waiting it would be a relief.

Betty Considine saw them come out the door, and she came up quickly. "Major Paddock, can I be of help?"

A fourth person might make it easier. . . . "All right," he said. "Glad to have you. I know he needs rest, and he seems to have been wounded."

At Paddock's quarters, it was Betty who opened the door, and she saw the expression on Denise Paddock's face when she glimpsed the stranger. She seemed to stiffen, then pale, but she was at once composed. "This way," she said.

She led the way to the spare bedroom and helped her husband draw off the brush-scratched, desert-worn boots. It was she who noted the blood-stained collar and located the wound. Betty, looking past Denise, saw the dressing on the wound. "He escaped from the Indians?" she asked.

Kilrone, who had kept on his feet until they entered the room, had collapsed at the bedside and now lay on the bed unconscious.

"Why do you ask that?"

"That's an Indian dressing. I've seen them before."

Paddock looked down at the man on the bed. No, he was not really unconscious, merely sleeping heavily. An Indian had dressed that wound . . . and he had denied being seen by the Bannocks.

Denise had removed the dressing, and Paddock stared at the puckering wound. "That's not fresh," he said.

"Three days," Betty guessed. "Maybe four." She had helped her uncle treat too many injured men in these past few years not to know.

An Indian dressing on a wound, and no friendly Indian within miles. A wound several days old, and he had come from the heart of Indian country.

Suppose—one had to suppose everything—suppose the man was a renegade? What better way to scatter the forces of a post and leave it helpless?

Paddock told himself he must forget all he had known of Captain Barnes Kilrone in the past. Nor must he think now of Denise. There was too little time. He had a decision to make.

Captain Mellett and the forty-seven men of M Troop would reach the North Fork by sundown tomorrow. It was doubtful if the Bannocks would attack before daylight the following morning. There was always the possibility that some survivor of the massacre of I Troop would get through to Mellett with a warning, but that was an outside chance. Mellett was a seasoned officer, sure to be careful, but even the best of men could be trapped.

Every minute of delay put Mellet closer to probable death by ambuscade. Between Mellett's troop and possible massacre stood only the judgment of Major Frank Paddock. And to send out a troop to relieve Mellett would leave the post vulnerable to attack, practically helpless.

His decision had to rest on the word of one man a man who perhaps could not be trusted . . . or could he?

Paddock stepped out into the heat and dust of the compound and closed the door behind him. If he could get another troop into position to hit the Bannocks as they attacked Mellett, he would have them between two fires and might wipe them out. It was a challenging thought. This could be enough to erase all his past failures.

But it involved a problem almost too difficult for him to come to grips with—a problem full of uncertainties. Could he get K Troop in position in time to help Mellett? Dare he accept the risk of leaving the post exposed to attack? Suppose the Bannocks had already foreseen that possibility, and even now might have the bulk of their men ready for an attack on the post and its few remaining soldiers? . . . Or K Troop might fail to reach Mellett in time, and be trapped themselves.

He went back to his desk and stared at the map on the wall. It was ninety miles to the North Fork, and K Troop would have no more than thirty-six hours in which to cover the distance, all of it rough, dangerous country where the enemy might be encountered at any moment.

Almost great
By Keith Vaglienti
Kilrone is a good, solid Western adventure in the Louis L'amour tradition. Or it would be were it not for the terribly rushed ending. L'amour does a wonderful job of pacing the story and building suspense up until the very end of the book at which point several major plot points occur suddenly with no explanation. For example, the cavalry commander who has been so set on tracking the renegade Indians down has a sudden, unexplained change of heart and returns to the beleaguered outpost just in time to save the day. One minute he's discussing with his scouts the best route to take to rendezvous with another cavalry troop. The next time we see him, he's returned to the outpost and there's no explanation for why he turned his troop around. Another example, there is foreshadowing throughout the book that a certain minor character is going to play a very pivotal role in things before the story is over. They do, in fact, play a pivotal role in events but we don't get to see it. We only learn about it after the fact from another character and even then we don't really learn any details. It's almost as if L'amour suddenly found himself up against a deadline and didn't have enough time to finish the story properly so he just tacked on a quick ending. It's very unsatisfying to have a great story, which is a very gripping read, build up to an ending that basically amounts to, "...and then the cavalry came back and saved the day, the renegade Indians disbanded and went their seperate ways, the villain got his just desserts, and the hero got the girl." Kilrone is an okay book but L'amour has written much better. If you want to read something in this vein I would suggest the classic "Hondo", also by L'amour, which is a far superior book.

Powerful pulp Western
By F. J. Harvey
Kilrone is an ex Army man who gave up a promising military career after a confrontation with an exploitative Indian agent and has spent his post military career as a drifter. He rides into an Army outpost to alert the commander to an Indian raid that has wiped out a cavalry patrol. The post commander is Paddock ,a once high flier whose career has been blighted by scandal and an old acquaintance of Kilrone whom he suspects to be in love with his wife.
Against the advice of Kilrone the commander sets out to warn the other patrol in Indian territory of possible attack Kilrone rightly feeling the attack was a ruse to get him to weaken the post defences so the tribes can take over the fort.
He stays behind to organise the defence of the post while Paddock takes the field to warn the other patrol. That is not all however for Kilrone's foprmer nemesis Iron Dave Sproul is a key man in the fort and has been selling guns to the Indians
L'amour cuts briskly between the siege and the troops in the field and action is vividly described and plentiful with something of the more explicit violence that emerged in the genre -celluloid and paper-during the mid sixties. The climactic fist fight is especially powerful and the seeker after action will not put down the book feeling short changed.
The climax fells rushed and the conflict between Kilrone and Paddock is not fleshed out enough ,while the women remain cyphers. This is all a little carping however and overall the book is a satisfying read for lovers of the genre.
