One such subdivision included the professions; access to which required a multiple choice exam. Enter, Prometheus Lionhart, and his gift of knowledge. This manual on test preparation in radiology is the first of its kind, and one frantically needed as medical examination joins the digital age with the abolition of the oral boards and the corresponding well-established preparatory methods. As Aristotle was a student of Plato, who ultimately surpassed his teacher in philosophic largesse, so too shall Prometheus Lionhart, as his gift of knowledge turns to wisdom, and that wisdom to the ability to repay student loans… maybe.

Highly Recommended

This is the best single book available to study for the ABR Core Exam. There are simply no other comprehensive study guides in print for the Core Exam, so buying this is a no-brainer. Other people have used Core Radiology by Mandell and Primer of Diagnostic Imaging (which are good), but these predate the ABR Core Exam and do not contain any strategy/gamesmanship for the exam. I think it is remarkable that one individual published the entire book (and under a pen name at that). Bravo!

I read through it slowly once over a 2 month period after going to AIRP in February, and then rapidly over 2 week period before the exam in June. It is likely not possible to read this book as a first or second year resident and get much out of it, because it is by nature a high-level REVIEW book, and is not intended to introduce concepts to you, but rather clarify/review them for the purposes of passing the Core Exam (Core Radiology by Mandell probably serves this purpose better). While reading the book, I had my computer next to me and would frequently look up example images to help things stick.

You can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. For example, you can read the 60 page PEDS section in 3 hours and probably pass the PEDS section (with some experience). The physics section is quite good, actually, and can replace HUDAs book. I studied for physics using the RSNA modules, going to HUDA's course, and reading the physics section in this book, and that was PLENTY. The highest yield physics resource (besides doing the RSNA modules, which is probably mandatory) is going to HUDA's course - he really understands boards prep.

While I enjoyed the book and it is a relatively fast read, one annoyance I have is that the author overuses the phrase "high-yield". However, it is hard to say what is high-yield when you are testing all of radiology in 600+ questions. I really liked going through his strategy section as a last day comprehensive review.

It is unfortunately not the only resource you will need to study for the test, however. You will have to do practice questions/cases to reinforce material and see images. Keep in mind that 15-30% of any given section will be Physics/Quality and Safety. His Quality and Safety review is not sufficient for the exam, and you really should read the ABR document. Dr. David Stevens from Stanford posted some lectures on Youtube going through the document which I found incredibly helpful.

The other recommended resources I used to supplement (more than necessary, but I had time to study): RadPrimer (I did not do neuro or MSK because the massive amount of questions in those sections, with no consequence), QEVLAR, A Core Review Question books (MSK, GU, Breast), Breast Case Review, a few RadCases books (Nukes, IR, Neuro), Thomas Popes Aunt Minnie book (interesting but likely unnecessary), and the Crack the Core Case book. Near the end of your studying you will be able to blitz through a case book in 1-2 days. I don't list all of those to freak you out, only to give some suggested resources. What you choose to study will depend highly on your own training, interests, and time given to you by your program. Best wishes to all of those entering boards prep!

Excellent books to prepare for the core exam

Excellent books to prepare for the core exam! I can say this having passed the core taken in June 2016. I used Volumes 1 and 2 as well as the Case Companion. Yes, there are a grammatical errors here and there, but they are easy to overlook. It provides a great review and hits pretty much all the highlights that you need to know for the exam. Prometheus sprinkles in enough humorous comments to keep you awake and alert during long study sessions. Volume 2 includes a physics section that is invaluable- I studied this section multiple times to fully understand it (using some outside resources) and thought it thoroughly covered the necessary physics that was tested on the exam. The strategy, non-interpretive skills, and biostats sections are very useful.

Best study material

I am an R3 resident studying for boards. This book covers most of the high yield topics. I would have liked more pictures but that is what statdx is for. The author is pretty funny and his mnemonics are great. I would highly recommend this book for boards (along with qbanks). The upper class-men at my program swears by this book.

A great book outlining the complicated history of dinosaurs.

This book is full of maps and charts on when, where, and how the dinosaurs lived. It is an excellent resource for seriously interested people. The only thing I didn't like about it were the sometimes misleading illustrations. If I remember correctly, Tyrannosaurus is pictured with three manual digits.

A good read.............. however, not very deep

Benton does a good job giving an overview of when and where dinosaurs roamed the earth. The art needed a little more attention to detail and the maps could have been more precise for my taste. But, all in all, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to all.

Arthur Miller's 1949 Death of a Salesman has sold 11 million copies, and Willy Loman didn't make all those sales on a smile and a shoeshine. This play is the genuine article--it's got the goods on the human condition, all packed into a day in the life of one self-deluded, self-promoting, self-defeating soul. It's a sturdy bridge between kitchen-sink realism and spectral abstraction, the facts of particular hard times and universal themes. As Christopher Bigsby's mildly interesting afterword in this 50th-anniversary edition points out (as does Miller in his memoir, Timebends), Willy is closely based on the playwright's sad, absurd salesman uncle, Manny. But of course Miller made Manny into Everyman, and gave him the name of the crime commissioner Lohmann in Fritz Lang's angst-ridden 1932 Nazi parable, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse.

The tragedy of Loman the all-American dreamer and loser works eternally, on the page as on the stage. A lot of plays made history around 1949, but none have stepped out of history into the classic canon as Salesman has. Great as it was, Tennessee Williams's work can't be revived as vividly as this play still is, all over the world. (This edition has edifying pictures of Lee J. Cobb's 1949 and Brian Dennehy's 1999 performances.) It connects Aristotle, The Great Gatsby, On the Waterfront, David Mamet, and the archetypal American movie antihero. It even transcends its author's tragic flaw of pious preachiness (which undoes his snoozy The Crucible, unfortunately his most-produced play).

Great American Tragedy

On ~Salesman's~ first opening night, when the curtain dropped at the end of the performance, something strange occurred, something that had never been seen before in American theatre: the audience, a full house, did not applaud, but sat motionlesss in their seats in silence. As minutes passed, a few people stood up to put on their coats, but sat down again, turning and discussing their lives. This strange behaviour continued on for some hours. Miller sat backstage, his head in his hands, not wanting to confront the possibility that his play had been a flop - this was far from the case, ~Salesman~ was a runnaway hit, and continues to be the emblematic portrayal of personal tragedy combined with cultural crises.
~Salesman~ is about many things. It is a tragedy about the collapse of the notion that personal success is measured by one's financial prosperity. Willy Loman's tragedy is really two-fold: the need of most people to make a 'mark' in their lives either through financial success or merely being loved by one's friends and family. In the end, Loman comes to realize his son Biff loves him; however, ironically, this realization only propounds his material failure which consequently, leads to his final attempt at 'success', ending in his tragic suicide.
This superlative play is a dramatic lesson in the individual tragedy of a man pursuing materialistic success at the expense of the higher values of personal, emotional growth and fulfillment that can only be achieved by truly knowing oneself.
~Salesman~ is a moralistic play. It teaches us that Willy Loman is Everyman. We're all part of a system that pushes the lie that materialism measures the worth of people, but to exclude basic human values, knowledge, community, and love, is to court disaster, and in poor Willy Loman's case, self destruction.
This play is the great American tragedy and a valuable lesson for us all.

Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman," while confusing when just read through the text alone, is an awesomely crafted play that takes drama to the next level. Now being interested in plays, I decided it was time to read this one, being that this is considered a classic by many (which I could easily see why). Reading this play makes me want to write plays. Reading something like this makes me believe that I can some up with something great too. I am glad that I finally took the time to read it.
The story is about a broken-hearted salesman, Willy Loman. He is a man no longer living in the real world but is mostly trapped in his own delusional world. He can't let go of the past no matter how hard he tries, and it's eating him up inside. He wants to believe that his family is a shoe-in for greatness, no matter how lonely and sad his wife is, or how much of a player/swinger his youngest son is, or how confused and anti-business his oldest son is. You put all of this together and you get a glimpse of an American tragedy that is so powerful and sad that it makes you think these things happen all the time. From Page 1 you know it's not going to end on a happy note, but you decide to take the path anyways. And a path worth taking it is.
I admit that I was confused at certain points, because through the text alone it is very hard to separate Willy's reality from his imagination. There are places where Willy departs from reality and goes back to the past and it makes it very hard for us to figure out what is going on if we're only reading it. When I saw the movie version after reading this, I was able to appreciate the play more. I understood what confused me and I was able to figure out what was happening. Despite some confusing moments it is still a tremendous play that is very involving from start to finish. You are able to sympathize with the main character, and with the rest of the characters as well. You know a writer has done the job right when you are able to feel or care for every single character (or at least almost all of them, being there will be a few minor characters you're really not supposed to care for that much. This is something that always happens in the world of fiction and is to be expected). Arthur Miller did an amazing job of writing such a realistic and emotionally driven play. The characters were realistic as well as the dialogue.
"Death of a Salesman" is more than just simply a stunning play; it is a beautiful portrait of a family dealing with hardships and troubles. As soon as I began the play I was unable to put it down until it was finished. If you want to read a great play and are interested in great works of drama, this is the one for you.

Rat Race Lost, State of Denial

Hopeless fathers & sons were a favorite theme of Miller. The pressure of failing aspirations. The horror of failure. Drawn between overconfidence and self-doubt. Flashbacks on scenes from a dreary life. Lies to others and oneself. Failures in job and family.
The play is one of the quintessential pieces of modern American theater. Its themes are known and have been expounded endlessly. Why is it still fresh? I have never watched it on stage nor screen. I have known it for ages, but could not find enough interest to look for a performance, nor to read it. Now LoA does it.
Looking at the reviews here on the Penguin modern classic page, I am wondering about the spread in reviews. From 5 to 1 stars all is there, with a downward slope towards the negative votes. The play has more friends than foes, but on an absolute level, the nays would sink an ordinary ship. Of course quality questions are not decided by democracy. One particularly daft observer produced a perfect inverted version of cultural Stalinism. With perfect perverted logic, he tells us that only positive depictions of the American dream are acceptable. That is completely in line with 'socialist realism': if the artist fails to enthuse about the reigning system, he is condemned.
Thanks to LoA for making me get to know the man Miller. I will definitely look for a movie version or go to a play if I find an opportunity.

This is the most unhelpful textbook I have ever used. Yes, it included all the significant personality theorists and theories, so as far as content goes, it's fine. BUT the explanations were so long-winded and convoluted that I couldn't understand some of the theories at all. I went away thinking I was just an idiot when it came to theories of personality, only to start looking at other textbooks and realize that no, the theories were perfectly within my understanding... when they were adequately explained.

This book is a must have for anyone who collects antique English silver. Not as comprehensive as a lot of others I have seen which is actually a plus since it fits comfortably in your pocket when you go antiquing. I keep my copy next to my computer so I have it handy while surfing the silver listings on eBay. Well worth the price.

In einer Gesellschaft mit h�ufig unbest�ndigen Familienverh�ltnissen und vielen Beziehungsabbr�chen steigt die Gefahr einer emotionalen Vernachl�ssigung und die daraus resultierenden Folgesch�den beim Kind. Deshalb bestehen Wege und Erfordernisse der Hilfe und Pr�vention f�r V�ter, M�tter und Kinder mit einem Vernachl�ssigungsrisiko. Ein Kind kommt nicht mit einer Traumatisierung zur Welt, sondern nur mit dem Risiko und der M�glichkeit, eine zu entwickeln. Familien mit vielf�ltigen Problemen, sogenannten Risikofaktoren, in diversen Lebensbereichen ben�tigen Hilfeleistungen zur besseren Wahrnehmung ihrer Erziehungsverantwortung. Letztlich liegen bei Vernachl�ssigungen und emotionalen Misshandlungen unterschiedlich ausgepr�gte Konstellationen pers�nlicher biografischer Defizite der Eltern, aufgrund eigener Deprivation oder Gewalterfahrung, famili�re, sozial vererbte oder anderweitig gest�rte Bindungsf�higkeit, sowie ung�nstige soziale Faktoren wie Armut, Alkoholismus, berufliche und pers�nliche Hoffnungslosigkeit und soziale Isolation vor. Der individuellen Unterst�tzung in Vernachl�ssigungsfamilien kommt auf diese Weise eine gro�e Bedeutung zu. Die Kooperation unterschiedlicher Fachkr�fte ist signifikant f�r die Wirksamkeit der Hilfen. Die Vernachl�ssigungsproblematik von Kindern weist darauf hin, dass gesellschaftliche Strukturen und Rahmenbedingungen in Wechselbeziehung mit individuellen Ursachen einen erheblichen Einfluss auf die Entstehung von Vernachl�ssigung haben. Vernachl�ssigung ist demnach nicht nur als individuelles Problem zu betrachten, sondern muss im Kontext der gesamten Lebensgeschichte des Kindes und den famili�ren und gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen gesehen und verstanden werden...

Indispensable, exhaustively complete, well written, entertaining and fun.

Indispensable, exhaustively complete, well written, entertaining and fun. Reading this book will be a great start to going on a Disney Cruise (note- they are not just for parents with kids!) or for deciding whether or not to book such a Magical cruise (Warning, the answer will likely be YES! after you read this guide!).

A few interesting sections include: Cost Considerations, Reassuring Words for Reluctant Cruisers, The Ten Best Bangs for Your Buck, what to pack and bring, a whole section on motion sickness and Travelers Tummy (I'll add here to bring along Ginger, like Gin-Gins or the tasty Altoid Ginger mints, and to take Probiotics), the Various Live Shows, Internet Issues and Tips, the various Ports and Embarkation centers, and so forth.

Honestly I did not know Disney cruised to so many areas- not only the Caribbean, but Europe, Alaska, etc.

The book can be funny too: "Coffee- the swill at the beverage stations can best be described as a tepid, vaguely coffee-flavored substance that may make you question your will to live". Fortunately, Len Testa follows that up with some great tips for coffee lovers.

This book is outstanding! We took our first ever Disney cruise this past March. We sailed the Disney Dream for 4 nights. Purchasing this book beforehand and reading it page by page was a tremendous help in knowing what to do and when to do it. A HUGE thank you to the authors, because this book saved us! I even packed it and took it on the cruise with us because I knew I'd refer often to it, and sure enough, I did! We plan on sailing The Fantasy in a couple of years, and I will definitely purchase the updated version before we go!
