Faulkner is odd
By J. Mattison
Really strange story. I didn't read it, but my son (who bought and read it for an English class) thought it was an intriguing story, if strangely told (this *is* Faulkner).

zooom.....Here's a clue; As I recall, he does all of one variable complex analysis in an introductory chapter less than 20 pages long, including a version of Cauchy's theorem more general than I wager most have ever seen.

Thorough, Eloquent, Admirable
By a reader
Although I feel unequal to doing justice to this excellent one-volume, collaborative history of the world, I want it to be noted that the claim in an earlier review that the Holocaust is omitted from this history is unfounded. This reviewer has obviously checked the index and the table of contents, noted a full chapter for "World War II" yet no index entry for the term "Holocaust," and has decided on that basis to slander an entire roster of historians, including, only among others, Jacques Barzun, Richard Hofstadter, John Garraty and Peter Gay (co-editor with Garraty of the entire volume and, I believe, himself Jewish) with some sort of hidden agenda, presumably anti-Semitism. To quote the Columbia History itself, from the "World War II" chapter:

"The impact of the Nazis' dreadful racial fantasies further exacerbated the situation [the post-war damage]. Some 6 million Jews and countless other innocents had been exterminated. The horrors of the concentration camps and gas chambers left memories that it would take a long time to erase. These profoundly affected the climate of the postwar world." (p. 1068).

I found this by looking under "Jews" in the index, sub-entry, "German persecution of" for which there are three entries, including the following, from the discussion of post-war race relations in the U.S.:

"The reaction to Hitler's nonsense about race and his slaughter of 6 million Jews because of their supposed racial inferiority could not help stirring the consciences of many white Americans." (p. 1141).

These are both from the 1981 printing. I don't believe the book has had more than one edition, originally published in 1972.

It's a shame to have to defend this book from someone who declines to even read the single chapter from which they deduce its hidden "political agenda." The work is both extraordinarily useful and an admirable demonstration of American learning - the premise, as advertised in the foreword by then-president of Columbia University William J. McGill, was to show that the history of the world, from the formation of the universe down to the present day, could be authoritatively treated entirely within the history department of a great American university. Thus each chapter is written by a Columbia-affiliated expert on that particular period (with some authors taking more than one chapter). It doesn't appear to me that any period or region is given short-shrift, especially considering that the book was intentionally limited to one volume, which extends here to just under 1200 pages.

The chapters are edited for a style approaching uniformity, yet often the writing reaches to eloquence, which must have flowed from the original author; Jacques Barzun's concluding chapter, "The State of Culture Today," is worthy of being read as a free-standing essay. And while most of the chapters have this free-standing, "encyclopedic" quality - making it a useful reference even if you haven't read it through -, they also allude to and ultimately complement each other so that continuous, if not seamless, reading of the book is possible to do with a good deal of pleasure.

I suppose unfortunately that it doesn't make sense to keep a book like this in print, given that the advance of historical research in the past 30 years may have surpassed some of the book's information, but perhaps a second edition could be updated and published by today's Columbia history faculty - I wonder if they are capable of matching their predecessors' feat with such thoroughness and grace?

A solid work on world history
By RoundhouseDude
The Columbia History of the World one of the few history books (like those of Nicholas Starling) that has impressed me because of its scholarly and "appropriately-detached" approach to certain emotional issues in world history. It does not impose upon the reader traditional biases and subjectivity but rather, it gives the facts as they happened, presents the common perceptions attendant to them, and allows the reader to form his own judgement and draw his own conclusions. There is no also no overbearing ethno-centrism, no unnecessary prejudices, no "good guys" or "bad guys" -- just a clear-flowing, unadulterated presentation of the last thousands of years of human history. I am not an expert of history nor do I claim to be. I am simply a history buff who finds thrill in world history as if it were a David Morrell or Robert Ludlum novel. I have read about four general world history texts (Gombrich, Roberts, Davis, Garraty) and I must say that Columbia will be my all-time favorite.

Terrific overview of historical events
By Dave Burkett
Covers an amazing amount of material from the time the earth first started coallescing from space dust all the way through to the 1970's (the edition I have was published then, I'm not sure if it's been updated). The structure is perfect for categorizing political and cultural events to capture the essence of what was happening at a given point in time. It's designed to jump in and out of chapters (very good index, chapter headings, timlines, short sections). Each chapter is written by experts on that time, so you get the sense that you're always hearing from an expert, although each chapter "reads" a little differently.
I've been taking it with me traveling for the last 15 years to Japan, Russia, Greece, Italy, Germany. It's a great way to read about what was happening as I've travelled to historical sites.

It is better than nothing
By JCarter
This is the official pocket Havamal that the military uses, which is why I chose this specific version as my "travel Havamal." However, I am not a fan of the Benjamin Thorpe translation as I find it difficult to understand and a bit confusing. The prose is also a bit rough, not as poetic as other versions. As such, it is not the helpful travel companion I was hoping for. Still, it is better than nothing.

For everyday reading and studying purposes I recommend the Auden and Taylor translation, but I also love the Olive Bray version because it is very poetic and I prefer the way it sounds. If you are looking for a straightforward translation that puts things into modern, basic terms then I recommend the Patricia Terry version.

Great little book to own
By Steve Onorato
I already own several versions of the Havamal, but I bought this one for the sole purpose of always having it with me. As a Forn Sir practitioner and sworn devotee of the All Father, I find it convenient to have his words as a guide in daily life, especially in the modern world. I would recommend this book to any follower of the old ways.

Love it!!
By Tina LeBouthillier
This is a perfect little book! It is pocket sized - 5.8 x 3.9 x 0.3 inches - handy to carry with you anywhere. There are three different covers (I got three of the black cover) and well formatted with a good-sized font for reading. Some extra pages in the back for your own notes too! It will be a great stocking stuffer and such a reasonable price that you can afford to get a few to donate to a raffle. This book is one of the things that people are always mentioning with the phrase, "Wouldn't it be a good idea if someone did this!" And it's Amazon Prime, so you get it fast with no shipping cost if you are signed up for Prime. Thank you Carrie - nice work!!! I will be getting more of these.

Once you do, the entire range of operating modes and the majority of the amateur spectrum below 30 MHz become available to you.

Got me through it
By H. Stewart
I bought this and the Extra Class version. After 3 weeks of casual study I passed the Technician, General, and Extra in one setting. I copied and then went through the pool of test questions included in the back of each book with a highlighter. Blue for the questions I 100% knew, green for the questions that I got with a little intuition (guessing not allowed), and yellow for the questions I did not understand. Each question in the pool has the section and page number listed making it easy to refer back to the section for further study. I went through all of my "greens" and then the "yellows" reading the relevant sections. Using this process with a clean copy of the pool questions I got to mostly "blue" and a couple of "greens"...and easily passed the three test. I also took the practice tests on the ARRL and the AA9PW dot com web sites.

Helpful for the General class exam, but there are opportunities for improvement
By Jim Carson
The spiral version as it's a LOT easier to manage on the bus commute, where I've done most of my studying for the exam. I've supplemented practice with an iPad app that quizzes me on a random selection of 35 questions. After a few runs of the app, I've identified areas where I need to bone up and have done so with the book. Although this edition of the book is for the question bank that begins July 1st, the basic principles have not changed materially from the soon-to-expire exam. I'm pretty confident I'm going to pass the exam on Monday without a problem. On that metric -- helping me with the test -- this book is fine.

I am less enthusiastic about over-presentation of material that distracts from clarity of understanding. For example, in the front of the book (1-2, repeated half-size on 3-7) is a Frequency Allocation Chart (also available on their web site) with a diagram of the bands, frequencies and modes. Because it's the generic diagram, it includes a lot of superfluous information such as the restrictions for Novice and Advanced licenses -- both deprecated in 2000, as well as changes enacted a couple of years ago. As a result, the chart is dense and less useful than it could be in this setting. It would have been super helpful if they included ONLY the information pertinent to General privileges. With the extra room, they could add supplemental information relevant to several of the questions on the exam: power restrictions, sideband use, and relative position of data vs voice.

Excellent Text Book - Good Resource Book
By Dr. Richard H. Knee
Excellent technical book to use when studying for the General or as a good resource book to have on the shelf. I find this book provides information above and beyond what you might need to know for the test so this is a text book for the serious student that wants to do more than just pass the test. I do use the Gordon West book to condense studying for specific exams so it is a good companion book.

Good Gift For the Neighbor Kids Who Are Going to Church Camp
By Spencer in Seattle
[[VIDEOID:6f6426c0897b150c7f17f12d03244275]] Too many adult coloring books that I've tried -- and there are many of them on the market now -- can hardly compare to regular coloring books. By this I'm not referring to the potty-mouthed nature of adult coloring books, but to the actual page designs. A good coloring book is defined by bounded regions, firm lines, and clever patterning. This book the first "adult" version that absolutely has that combination. It's funny and a good coloring book.

As for the neighbor kids, I think they'd love this coloring book. Or just cut out a page and insert it into any regular coloring book. That's always fun.

I was provided a free sample in exchange for my honest review.

A way to have fun and to relax
By Israel Drazin
There are many dozens of books like this one. The idea, I think, is two-fold. First, lots of people feel it is fun to deal with swear words, either to say them or see them, or to read them in novels. Second, psychologists have discovered that articulating swear words can be relaxing, release tension.
This book has twenty-five swear words, including words I never heard before. Each is surrounded and part of a design. If people take the time to color the design, it is likely that they will find the activity relaxing.

Nice floral designs around filthy words!
By Roseanne M.
This book offers a nice variety of designs with swear words ranging from simple designs centered on the page to full page designs that will take more time to complete. Most of the designs are floral, and a few have little animals around the words. I used Caran D'ache colored pencils to color the page I uploaded.

Overall, I like the designs, but the reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the quality of the line art. Some of the lines are so tiny, fuzzy, and close together that there is no way you could color between them. Also, quite a few designs are pixelated as if they were scanned in at a low resolution. And a few designs have speckles that almost look like dirt in the image (see my photos). This may not bother other people, but I have spent my career in the graphics/publishing industry and it really bothers me to see poor line/image quality.

Details of the book:
-25 down-right dirty swear word designs are printed on the front of the page only--nothing on the back
-Bright white paper (same as all the Amazon Createspace publications)
-Pages are not perforated
-Designs are suitable for markers (some pages will require a fine tip), colored pencils, and gel pens.
-Markers may bleed through, so use a blank page as a "color protector page".
-Glossy front and back covers

I received this product in exchange for an honest review, and my opinions are based on my actual user experience.

The Lioness in Winter
By Steve Hopkins
"If you survive long enough, you are revered -- rather like an old building."
Katharine Hepburn

So goes the quote 'the kate', the cultural centre named after Hepburn in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and opened shortly after her death in 2003, chooses to use on its own website. Like Simon Worrall's essay, it's a labour of love, affectionate and heartfelt, a testament to the regard the woman who was once referred to as Katharine of Arrogance has come to be held in. As his beautifully written piece makes clear though, it's not just longevity that stakes Hepburn's claim - in part, it's because she reminds us of an era that seems in some ways more authentic, and less shabby, than our own, and in larger part because Hepburn always, but always, remained herself. Never a celebrity, but for decades a star, the fire and snap of Hepburn's irascible, intelligent, nature are vividly and deftly painted in this more-than-an-interview portrait. If you don't know much about her, it's a great introduction, if you know a lot, then there's much to enjoy. Recommended.

What a waste!
By Geoffery L. Williams
As several other reviewers commented, this writer obviouslydidn't spend enough time doing background work- For example he says that Miss Hepburn had parkinsons disease, She didn't. She explains the shaking in her bio as well as Scott Berg in his book and nearly a decade of friendship with Miss Hepburn.

Don't waste your time with this bit of writing- Truman Capote's comment about bad reporting would seem to work in this case-"...That isn't writing, it's typing!"

A gem of a conversation
By Imogen Graham
Simon Worrall has achieved a coup with this unique last interview with Katherine Hepburn, one of the great actresses of the glory days of Hollywood. In a time when we are accustomed to non-stop celebrity revelations, this is a supreme example of a crafted interview with a true star, where we wait on her every word as she is persuaded to talk with great dignity about her life. A treasure for the archives.

Review
“As a former Ivy League admissions officer, I was overjoyed to see a book that hit the nail on the head regarding selective college admissions and how to take the process in stride. Students will find his book extremely useful and admissions officers will be relieved to see applicants who escape the cookie-cutter syndrome.”

—Dr. Michele Hernandez, author of A Is for Admission and president of Hernandez College Consulting and Application Boot Camp

“Disguised as a peppy college-admission guide, Newport’s book is actually a profound, life-affirming manifesto for ambitious high school students. Forgo the sleepless and cynical path to college acceptance. Instead, blaze your trail to the Ivy League by living a full life and immersing yourself in things that matter. Relax. Find meaning. Be you.”

—David Shenk, author of The Genius in All of Us

“This book should be on the shelf of every student who wonders how to stand out in the increasingly competitive race to get into a top college. His approach will not only help you win the admissions race, it will keep you sane while you run the marathon.”

—Joie Jager-Hyman, author of Fat Envelope Frenzy

Horseshoe Crabs and Blogs

THE IDEA of drastically reducing your schedule probably sounds great in theory—who wouldn't want to enjoy an abundance of free time? But if you're like many students I've advised, you probably have reservations about the impact of such a lifestyle on your chances of getting into college. Running through the back of your mind is a simple logic: doing more is more impressive; therefore, by cutting back you're reducing your impressiveness, and this will hurt your admissions chances.

You will soon come to understand that this is a flawed belief. The number and difficulty of your accomplishments play only a minor role in college applications. Other factors are much more important.

Below, I introduce two students. The first, Olivia, dedicated only a handful of hours each week during the school year to extracurricular activities, yet still won a full-ride scholarship to the University of Virginia. The second, Jessica, was often able to finish her week's homework by Tuesday night—leaving the rest of the week free. She got accepted into the University of California, Berkeley, her dream school.

Their stories will help acclimate you to the concept that light schedules can correspond with admissions success. In the chapters that follow, we'll dive into the details of exactly why this is true and how you can replicate these results.

The Horseshoe Crab Effect

In late March of 2008, Olivia, a high school senior from a small town near Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was ushered into a room. She took a seat across from a semicircle of five distinguished-looking men and women. The group greeted her with wide smiles, but their eyes were serious and appraising. The cramped dimensions of the room surprised Olivia. A desk, littered with the standard collection of photo frames and computer accessories, encroached on the floor space, leaving Olivia and her inquisitors almost uncomfortably close. "It was so small," she recalls. "It was just someone's office."

The mundane setting contrasted with the importance of the event taking place there. This was the final-round interview for the prestigious Jefferson Scholarship—an award that covered the full costs of attending the University of Virginia. Three months earlier, Olivia had been nominated by her high school for the prize. She had survived a round of regional interviews before being flown down to Charlottesville, Virginia—home to the university—for a battery of tests leading up to this interview. Over the past two days, Olivia had taken exams to assess her math and writing skills. She had also been given a packet of academic papers to read, and then placed in a conference room to debate their merits with other finalists while members of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation selection committee took notes. This final interview, however, held the most weight for the senior members of the foundation who would decide whether or not Olivia was Jefferson material.

To better understand what constitutes Jefferson material, consider a student whom I'll call Laura Gant, who won the scholarship the previous year. Laura liked to write. As a high school student she interned at Business Week and had several pieces published on the magazine's Web site. She also won the Victor L. Ridder Scholarship, the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award in Writing, and the Harvard-Radcliff Book Award. Not surprising, she boasted exceptional grades that had earned her an almost embarrassingly long list of academic awards and scholarships. In addition, she's an artist and a talented musician—both voice and piano—who studied her craft seriously at a special music school in New York State. She rounded out her activity list by being the co-president of a school club, a member of the National Honor Society, and the co-founder of a community service group, and she was heavily involved in both the theater and choir groups at her high school.

Laura is a sterling example of the standard thinking about college admissions. She distinguished herself in high school by demonstrating commitment to lots of activities. Her life, I imagine, must have been brutal—a constant stream of work driven by the persistent fear of falling short of perfection. In the end, however, the suffering paid off when she won the Jefferson. This is the type of student against whom Olivia had to compete.

Olivia had never heard of Laura Gant, and this was probably for the best. Olivia's extracurricular involvements looked nothing like Laura's. Olivia didn't win armfuls of awards. She was not a star musician or an artist. She didn't start any organizations,or, for that matter, even participate in that many. Here's what she did do: to satisfy her school's athletic requirement, she joined the dance team, a commitment that required only four to five hours a week.

"That was much better than the ten-plus hours you'd spend if you joined a real sports team," she told me.

During her senior year she joined the tech crew for the school musical, but this counted as an elective class. She also co-chaired her senior class's community service organization.

"In past years, the group marched in parades and held bake sales," she recalls. "My co-leader and I decided to not do that kind of thing. It really takes a lot of energy to organize high schoolers for things like that!"

Instead, she and her co-leader shunted their classmates toward an existing community service program that organized a service trip that would take place soon after graduation.

"Leading that group required, on average, about two hours a week," Olivia says. "It was not a huge commitment at all."

During her sophomore summer, she was also a part-time unpaid volunteer at the University of New Hampshire's marine biology laboratory. (The professor who ran the lab was her family's next-door neighbor.) You'll learn more about what sparked her interest in marine biology later in Part 1; for now it's enough to know that she returned to the lab her junior summer as a paid research assistant and planned on doing the same her final summer before college.

And that's about it.

If you're keeping score, the above entailed six to seven hours of activities per week during the school year—leaving Olivia's afternoons, evenings, and weekends wonderfully free. She had more than enough time to keep up with her courses without resorting to late nights or experiencing stress. And this still left abundant time to relax. Olivia enjoyed her underscheduled lifestyle, and she looks back on high school fondly.

She was not Laura Gant.

On the surface, it seemed as if Olivia's prospects for winning the Jefferson Scholarship were dim. She had avoided the stress that comes from an overpacked schedule, but as she sat before the five men and women who would decide whether to grant her one of their alma mater's most prestigious honors, she worried that she was about to pay the price for her happiness.

"At the time I felt really insecure about it. Maybe I should have played varsity soccer and lacrosse and, you know, become student council president," she recalls.

Some pleasantries were exchanged, and then the interview began in earnest. "Tell me," one of the men said, "about those horseshoe crabs."

With this question, the fear vanished from Olivia's mind. She knew how to talk about horseshoe crabs. The past two summers, she had spent every morning and every afternoon commuting to and from the UNH campus with her neighbor, the director of the lab where she worked, holding lively debates about the nuances of marine biology.

"One morning—to give you an example—the professor began going on about a paper on particular neurotransmitters in the brain of lobsters," Olivia told me. "It wasn't his area of research, but he was fascinated anyway. It helped me understand that being a scientist isn't just about focusing on one small area; it can also be about being interested in huge, broad topics." This interest had seeped into Olivia's personal life, affecting what she read and what she thought about.

The interview conversation soon turned to a book Olivia had recently read for fun: Emergence, by Steven Johnson—a look at how large-scale complex traits can arise from small-scale simple actions; for example, how thousands of ants following simple rules aggregate into an intelligently run colony. Olivia began to riff about the book. She discussed how studying the emergent traits of horseshoe crab populations, as Johnson had described researchers doing with ants, might yield new clues about the behavior of the crustaceans. She wanted to study both marine biology and environmental science at college so she could tackle interdisciplinary problems of this kind.

Olivia's idea about emergence was original, but to her it was not particularly special. She loved the field of marine biology and was used to coming up with and debating ideas about it. This was simply what you did at the lab where she worked. It was a natural by-product of being genuinely interested in the subject.

The five scholarship committee members, however, were entranced. They were used to students, like Laura Gant, who would enter that cramped office and give careful, official-sounding answers to their questions—never failing to miss an opportunity to highlight accomplishments from their lengthy resumes. They would say things like "My time spent volunteering at the local hospital taught me the importance of service." Or, "Being student council president is another example of my ability to lead."

Olivia, on the other hand, ignored this strategy. She exuded confidence and curiosity. Above all, there was real substance behind her words. Put another way, she was actually interesting, and this would take her further than she ever imagined.

The next night, after returning home to New Hampshire, Olivia got the call. This student from a small high school—a student with copious free time, who had never won major academic awards or competitions, or started any important club or organization, and who lived a happy, low-stress life—was informed that she had won the scholarship.

As it turns out, Olivia's story of interestingness trumping busyness is not unique. In the next section you'll hear about another laid-back student who transformed a love of life into admissions success.

The Forty-Minute Essay

Jessica, a student attending a private school in Upstate New York, decided as a sophomore to adopt an underscheduled lifestyle. This decision was prompted by a short-lived, ill-fated brush with entrepreneurship the year before. She had been paying fora deluxe Web hosting account, when she had an idea. She could rent an entire Celeron server from the hosting company for $59 a month. She could then resell a hosting account for around $90 to $100. The difference would be profit, which she could use to help pay her own server bills.

Jessica rented and resold her first server, and then soon thought: "Why not do this with more computers and make even more profit?" She discovered that a P4 rack server bought for $400 could be rented for $180, generating an even bigger profit after the initial cost was paid back. So she bought one—and then some more.

Things soon got out of hand. First there was the logistics of handling money and client accounts. Even today, years later, Jessica hesitates to talk about what she did wrong during that crazy year. She never incorporated the business and didn't handle the money well. With thousands of dollars sloshing in and out of personal bank accounts, more servers being bought, and bills mounting, the finances became complicated, and that bred stress.

The human problems made things even worse. On paper, renting a server for one price and re-renting for a higher price seems like automatic money. What this equation omits, however, is the late-night phone calls, from the companies paying those higher prices, when something went wrong.

Things often went wrong.

Jessica started bringing her cell phone to school to answer tech support calls in between classes. Her anxiety rose. The situation came to a head on New Year's Eve in her freshman year. Jessica was away for the holiday break with her family when her phone rang. "It was literally one minute before the ball was about to drop," she recalls. The call was from her business partner.

"Hey, big problems," he started. Jessica's stomach churned. "All of our customers just got their data wiped out by a hacker."

On the TV, the ball began its descent.

"I'm on vacation, can this—? Shit, this sounds really bad," Jessica replied.

It was possible that eight hundred companies had just lost their data. She knew the feeling well; earlier in the year the same thing had happened to the three hundred customers they had at the time. As the New Year officially began, Jessica punched in the number of the technician on call at the data center. It would be a long night.

A few months later Jessica found her way out of this self-created prison. A client offered to take over the servers and their accounts. Jessica wouldn't make any money from the deal, but the client would take on the outstanding bills. The agreement was made at five o'clock on a Tuesday morning over an MSN Web chat.

"It was sort of scary; it left a big gap in my life," Jessica recalls. "But it was also a relief. There is no way to describe what it's like."

The stress of this experience drove Jessica to vow that she would never lose control of her schedule again. She became wary, for example, about taking on too many commitments. She joined her school's model UN club and played in the jazz band. She also did some volunteering and was involved with student government. But these were her only formal activities. In fact, she even left most of these minor clubs off her college applications, explaining, "I thought they would clutter things." At the beginning of her junior year, she also started a blog to help work through some of her thoughts about the experience with entrepreneurship that had shaken up her freshman-year life. It was a way to stay connected to that world without actually running a company.

Jessica kept her academic demands equally light. "On a weekday, I might work until eight and then I was done," she told me. "I rarely worked on weekends. I would just hang out, work on my blog, or build random Web site stuff."

She was good at starting assignments early and taking advantage of slow periods to get ahead on her work. She was so good, in fact, that by her junior year she would often finish her homework for the week as early as Tuesday evening, leaving the rest of the week completely free for her to do whatever she wanted.

"It was such a relaxed time," she recalls.

Jessica was about as far from a grind as it is possible to be without failing out of school. So when it came to writing her college application essay for Berkeley, one of her dream schools, it didn't cross her mind to obsess over the task. Fortunately, Jessica had some experience with writing. Her blog had led her to devote much of her free time to informally reading and thinking about entrepreneurship and talking to interesting people involved with it. As I'll explain, it was this thinking and writing that made her genuinely interesting, and it was her interestingness that would make her application so unique and powerful—helping her get into this notoriously competitive school.

Worked for Stanford & Harvard
By Victor Cheng
I picked up this book because I'm a parent and was intrigued by the premise. Little did I realize that the approach described in the book is actually the approach I took (without realizing it) to get into Stanford many years ago and is the same approach my brother took to get into Harvard.

I also have a friend who was an application reader at Stanford. There's a remark in particular she made about the process that jumped out at me. Each reader will read several hundred applications. Most applications are boring. Most seem the same as the next. The readers often get bored by reading 400 applications in a row that all seem, well the SAME.

This significant point on this is the applications are STILL boring even if they are all impressive in the SAME WAY. This is a nuance in college admissions that I think is really lost on a lot people who apply. There are two ways to get into a top school: 1) be the smartest / most academically accomplished applicant, 2) be smart enough but really unusual / different in some unconventional way.

The Superstar book is the only book I've ever seen on the latter.

How to be a High School Superstar
By BoulderDad
I'm fifteen, and attend a college prep K-12 school, where from sixth grade up the focus is college, college, college. I started attending this school for high school only, after attending a more lax charter where the focus was on making a difference in society through charity, not necessarily on competition in academia, in that until high school, I never received grades.

My dad got me this book last week. I read the whole thing in one day, and I loved it. My school puts so much pressure on math and physics, and I'm friends with so many people who go to summer school to take more of those classes and who actively enjoy them. Since the start of freshmen year I'd been trying to get better at those subjects because that was what everyone around me perceived as important, but I have very little interest in physics and only a bit more in math. I actively enjoy biology, language arts, social studies, climate science and genetic engineering, but because of the pressures of my school life I didn't focus on them as much as I knew I wanted to.

After reading this book, I've felt sort of free to not try and master a subject that I know I would be miserable studying. Instead, I'm turning my attentions back to genetics, biology and climate sciences.

Before reading this book, I was stressed out and unhappy. I'm entering sophomore year, and I was planning on doubling up Chemistry and Physics classes during the year so I could gain an edge and stand out on college application forms. Now, though, with the full permission of my father, I probably will not be taking high school physics. Instead, this year I'm signing up for AP Biology.

This book is definitely a must-read.

had faith...and it worked!
By bookworm718
I picked up this book during winter break of junior year, wondering how I was ever going to stand out in college applications. I was stressed out with multiple club responsibilities just like anyone else, multiple APs, Asian parents pressuring me to get at least a 2300 on the SAT. I picked up this book because I read his book on study strategies and I liked his straightforward, concise style.

It was lifechanging.

Newport basically asks you to quit things that are boring and "don't matter" and instead focus on a few interests. It was a big risk to take, but Newport asks you to have faith that it will work spendidly to make you an interesting person, instead of an overachieving, boring tryhard. I have him to thank for making my life more authentic, and being admitted to various top-10 universities.

The book shows you step-by-step, how various high-schoolers achieved awe-inspiring accomplishments such as creating a health curriculum adopted by multiple states, becoming a tech celebrity, or writing a best-selling book. It rests on the basic idea that impressiveness comes from things that aren't hard to accomplish but are hard to simulate the steps required to get there. Well, this book unlocks the secrets, but leaves just enough guidance to give one the freedom to do one's own thing.

In addition, this book also has helpful tips like how to pick your classes, how to study more effectively, how to do well on the SAT's, etc. Buy it and you won't regret it.

A Natural History of Conifers, by Aljos Farjon

A compelling account of the extraordinary relatives of ordinary garden conifers.

Leading expert Aljos Farjon provides a compelling narrative that observes conifers from the standpoint of the curious naturalist. It starts with the basic question of what conifers are and continues to explore their evolution, taxonomy, ecology, distribution, human uses, and issues of conservation. As the story unfolds many popular misconceptions are dispelled, such as the false notion that all conifers have cones. The extraordinary diversity of conifers begins to dawn as Farjon describes the diminutive creeping shrub Microcachrys tetragona, whose strange seed cones resemble raspberries, and the prehistoric-looking Araucaria meulleri.

The taxonomic diversity of conifers is huge and Farjon goes on to relate how, over the course of 300 million years, these trees and shrubs have adapted to survive geological upheavals, climatic extremes, and formidable competition from flowering plants. All who seek to learn more about the early history of life on our planet will cherish this book.

Review

“Organized in topically centered, lively chapters that include a discussion of conifer ecology and conservation. It is well illustrated with color photographs and line drawings of the trees, their structures, and the landscapes they dominate. Not exactly an encyclopedia but rather a sourcebook, this is the place to go for information about conifers. Highly recommended.”—Choice

“If you want to find out more about conifers, then [this book] by the naturally acclaimed expert, Aljos Farjon, will sate your curiosity, your thirst for knowledge and your enthusiasm for those exciting plants that make up this group.”—Virginia Master Gardeners Association

“Not since Rachel Carson has the public been graced with a scientist that writes with the interest of a novelist. Anyone with a curiosity about the early history of plant life on our planet will relish this book.”—Garden Compass

From the Inside Flap

Conifers are the most diverse, interesting, beautiful trees in the world, so why is it that our gardens are home to so few species? Part of the reason lies in their economic importance which, by focusing attention on relatively few species, has limited our understanding of one of the most remarkable plant groups on earth. Leading expert Aljos Farjon provides a broader perspective with this compelling narrative that observes conifers from the standpoint of the curious naturalist. It starts with the basic question of what conifers are and continues to explore their evolution, taxonomy, ecology, distribution, human uses, and issues of conservation. As the story unfolds many popular misconceptions are dispelled, such as the notion that all conifers have cones (untrue), and the extraordinary diversity of conifers begins to dawn as Farjon describes the diminutive creeping shrub "Microcachrys tetragona," whose strange seed cones resemble raspberries, and the prehistoric-looking "Araucaria meulleri." The taxonomic diversity of conifers is huge and Farjon goes on to relate how, over the course of three 300 million years, these trees and shrubs have adapted to survive geological upheavals, climatic extremes, and formidable competition from flowering plants. Scarcely less remarkable is his explanation of how conifers, with only 627 species, grew to occupy every continent on earth ranging from the high latitudes to the tropics. This illuminating review will fascinate plant lovers who wish to discover the extraordinary relatives of ordinary garden conifers, natural historians, who will relish seeing conifers reviewed in a broad context, and all who seek to learn more about the early history of life on our planet.

GREAT Book On The Biology Of Conifers
By P. Pollock
I came into possession of this book in the strangest way ... but I'm so glad I did! I asked a botanist for a book that would help me with tree systematics (identifucation) and this book was recommended. It was a little strange to make the purchase, because i was really looking for info on oak and birch trees. And secondly, it just so happened ... that i had found some very unique conifer trees on the tops of the southern Andes mountains, and i really wanted to identify them. So what the heck, i bought the book. What a pleasure, when it arrived!! Author Aljos Farjon has done a terrific job of describing conifer trees, how they have evolved and changed over time, and how the various aspects of their biology ... produce the tree that is standing in front of you today. Furthermore, the book is very readable, and the color plates are high quality. i was encouraged to discover that I could identify which Family 'my tree' in the Andes belonged to ... it didnt take long at all. This book is Highly Recommended if you have an interest in conifers, tree identification, tree biology ... or you just love trees. Big thanks to the author!

I wanted to like this book more than I did.
By James Philipp
This book fills a gap in the popular literature on conifers: there's really a strong need for a comprehensive review of the natural history of conifers. But if that's what you are looking for, you will be disappointed here. Still, this volume has some strengths.

Some of the high points of this text: (1) There a many photos of species where it is difficult to find good photographs; most notably of the Southern hemisphere species. It is almost worth keeping the book on my shelves just for the "tree porn". (2) Again, it is really the Southern species where this book really provides new details. If you are looking for a work that discusses the new finds in Indo-China or New Caledonia this is a book not to be missed.

Where I was disappointed: (1) Most notably, this book is in dire need of editorial coherence. It reads mostly like a collection of magazine articles that have been very lightly reshaped into a thematic structure. This book really would have benefited from a more disciplined analytic structure. (2) I really wanted to see more sustained discussion of the evolutionary linkages of the conifers--especially in reference to Northern hemisphere species. There's bits and pieces here (even chapters with titles that look like they will provide the sustained analysis that I'm looking for) but the discussions are just so scattered as to be frustrating.

In short, this is the type of book that you can open up at almost any point and start reading--and that's not necessarily a good thing. Again, I really wanted to like this book more than I did.

A Book Worthy of its Subject But Somewhat Flawed
By Ronald M. Lanner
This book has a lot going for it. The author has been most recently head of the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and has had a front-row seat as a conifer taxonomist during the development of three key disciplines of the last few decades: molecular genetics, cladistic analysis, and earth history. Unlike many taxonomists he glories in making extensive field trips throughout the conifer world, for business and pleasure. His writing style is generally clear and engaging, and occasionally hits some very high notes. And he is a good photographer and a talented botanical artist. Thus he has created a modern treatment of the conifers that would have been impossible just a few years ago, and he has imbued it with deep concern for the biodiversity of the order Coniferales and the preservation of rare and endangered species. He interprets "natural history" broadly and is free to inquire into any aspect of conifer lore, from evolution to forest products. Surely this book will accomplish the author's goal of bringing more respect to these tribes of trees that are major parts of the silva in both hemispheres.
There is a wealth of fascinating information here, and the author is an affable guide taking us along on numerous exciting quests. The stories of discovery of new-to-science conifers like Wollemia and Xanthocyparis add spice to the overall conifer story, as do travels to New Caledonia and other venues of remarkable trees. But not everything is equally well done. Some chapters are densely academic, heavy going for amateurs lacking technical credentials. A preoccupation with numerical measures of diversity, and an emphasis on extinct groups may not appeal to many.
Mistakes or faux pas are fairly common, and range from the trivial to the profound. A few examples: use of the term "appendices" where American English would use "appendages" (with neither term in the too-skimpy glossary)adds puzzlement to an already dense anatomical discussion of cone structure; reference to a 3600+ year-old Utah juniper known since 1956 to be less than half that age; numerous fine botanical drawings whose plant parts are unlabeled and lack scales (i.e. "X 2"); a dismissal of the possible evolutionary importance of hybridization in conifers despite its commonness in pines and firs; an equally abrupt dismissal of the idea of reticulate evolution, an area of active research; a weak treatment of mycorrhizae which does not mention the profoundly different types found in Pinaceae vs. Cupressaceae -- surprising for a taxonomist; a description of the mutualism of nutcrackers and white pines with several material factual errors; a statement that bark beetles invade the cambium, while they actually invade the phloem; omitting windborne soil particles from the ingredients of "canopy soil", which accumulates in branch crotches and sustains epiphytes; attributing clones of Pinus pumila to shoots sprouting from the roots whereas it is due to rooting of branches in contact with the ground. The author is often on shaky ground writing about wood. For example, he errs in stating that Great Basin bristlecone pine "has some of the densest and hardest of all woods", or that sugar pine and western white pines are "nonresinous", or that wood of Cupressaceae is "more fibrous" than that of Pinaceae (he must mean finer-grained), or that hollow trees grow new wood on the inside as well as the outside of the trunk. The fleshy fruits of Torreya are labeled as "seeds" in a photograph. Though geography seems one of his strong suits, the author writes incorrectly that Port-Orford-Cedar "is restricted to mountains on the border between California and Oregon". He states twice that California's only Taxaceae species is Torreya californica, overlooking Taxus brevifolia. In cataloging that state's biodiversity he claims 22 pines. In my book Conifers of CaliforniaConifers of California, I list 18 pines (including P. washoensis, around which there is some controversy)plus one pinyon pine hybrid. I cannot quite see where 4 more species have immigrated to this state.
The book's index is not as lengthy and inclusive as a book of this scope deserves. You will not find cambium, seeds, rust diseases, roots, or many other terms to take you to useful information.
Even more grievous, however, is the very skimpy bibliography. The purpose of this book is to make available much of what has been learned about conifers in recent decades, and a reader should be able to follow up some of the many leads provided here.Yet the bibliography lists a mere 52 items. Ten of these are the author's own previous works and 16 are on paleobotanical topics. Nine are general biological works or are about other plants than conifers. Why does this matter?
Well, take for example the author's statement that drooping pine needles may be an adaptation to protect them from dwarfmistletoe infection. He gives no indication whether this is his idea, or the result of someone's research. If you want more on this, you cannot get help from the literature list. This is true of many speculations, possible matters-of-fact, and arguments made throughout the text. The feeble bibliography not only leaves much of the text unsupported, but impedes readers from further pursuit. Besides, it would have been a simple matter to list the most useful 100 conifer books as a special feature, tying this new volume to the historical development of conifer science.
