A very pleasant piece of escapism

Mary Calmes' novel "The Guardian" is an entertaining blend of fantasy and romance that tells the tale of alternate dimensions, love, and personal sacrifice. This light and well-written story moves between two worlds to bring its heroes together, split them apart, and then reunite them. While its plot moves quickly enough to keep us involved, it still provides a richness of detail that draws us into the story and involves us with its characters.
I found Ms. Calmes' writing style to be very readable. Her narrative is smooth and flows comfortably, and her characters are memorable, well-developed, and colorful. Not only does she create heroes that we can't help but love, but her secondary characters are equally alive and appealing.
Jude and Eoin Thral have an alpha/omega pairing that is very popular in m/m romances. They complement each other. Jude is the little guy and the physically weaker or the two, but he is intelligent and quick of wit. Eoin is stronger and steadier, with a strongly-developed sense of honor and duty. Eoin has the reputation of being a fearful warrior, but around Jude he is a pussycat. Or perhaps I should say a puppy dog. I truly enjoyed his personality as a dog and rather missed the dog when he changed into human form.
Jude is almost too perfect, being both physically beautiful and likeable, but we can't hold that against him. Ms. Calmes has given him faults that help temper his perfection. We are told, although we never actually witness this, that he is overly confident and smugly self-righteous about his work. He also exhibits a surprising selfishness (thankfully short-lived) when he tries to make his lover choose between love and duty.
This is an emotional story, but it is not all melodrama. We certainly do feel Jude's despair when he has to leave his lover behind, but there is also humor to provide balance. One such comic moment occurs when the castle prostitutes find that their services will no longer be necessary for Eoin; their reaction of absolute joy is quite funny.
In all, I found "The Guardian" to be a very pleasant piece of escapism. It entertained me and held my interest throughout the entire story (no mean feat, given how distractible yours truly has been lately), and I thought it was quite well done. Ms. Calmes is a talented writer and storyteller, and I'll be looking forward to her future releases.

The Guardian by Mary Calmes

This is the second book I read by Mary Calmes, and while the first one was good, but maybe I felt still like it was a debut novel, The Guardian feels way more accomplished. As in the previous novel there are strong yaoi influence in the novel, but not the usual seme / uke pair, maybe more that yaoi novels where the innocent young boy discovers that his pet is not exactly what it seems. Only that here, the young boy is not so young, but he still preserves all the physical traits of that pretty boy.
Jude is a successful PR working in marketing, he is very handsome but not in a blatant way, he is the type of man that at first you didn't look twice, but then he enters under your skin, and before you realize it, you are addicted. It happens so that, when Jude's boss changes, the new boss is more interested in Jude's partner, than in him. And Jude, diplomacy is not his strength, decides to dump both lover than job. While he is commiserating himself, he feels the strong need to help a stray dog, a very big stray dog. Everyone seems scared by "Joe", but not Jude: from the first moment the big dog heralds himself Jude's guardian and Joe has only two things in mind, protect Jude and avoid that anyone else come near him.
Obviously Joe is not a dog, he is a creature from a fantasy parallel world and his name is Eoin. In his world Eoin is indeed both a Guardian than a beast, he is born as a dog, and was given to a noble family to be raised as the Guardian of the house. He is able to shift between man and dog, but indeed he was raised and he still lives like a dog. He has no family, he was separated from them when he was only few weeks old; then he was trained to be a warrior and to not have a personal interest if not the one of the family that owns him. He is not treated bad, but indeed he is no more than a pet: he is fed and dressed, sometime also petted, but no more than that. Eoin doesn't know family, and so when he meets Jude, and recognizes in him his cairn, his heart, his mate, Eoin has only one thing in mind, to make him happy, and obviously means for Jude to be with him.
Jude is a nice man, but I think he is also very lucky and sometime unaware of the world. I have the feel that he has not had so many bad experiences in life, and even loosing his boyfriend was not bad after, he was not the right man for him. Jude has a good job, that he likes, a family that love and support him and friends who are willing to deal with him when he is in a swinging mood. Even when he finds himself in a fantasy world, a medieval nightmare for everyone else, he takes it almost like a special holiday, like he is in a themed amusement park. But Eoin doesn't want him to change, Eoin loves him exactly like that, his oblivious cute little mate.

The story is good enough...

When I looked for this and similar titles by the same author, I wondered why it was so expensive - about twice as much as an ordinary paperback. I thought maybe it was because it was more of a special interest item. After I got it in the mail, I think I know part of why it cost so much... It's only about half the pages of a normal paperback, but the book is huge! Its pages are as big as most hardbacks! They used twice as much material making it as they really needed. Why? I have no idea. As far as the story goes, its good, if a bit formulaic. I've read reviews that complain about the author's protagonists being 'too perfect'. I won't bore you with such clich�d crap. Who wants to read about average people? It's fiction. It's supposed to better than reality.
Mary Calmes does seem to follow a pattern of sorts with her gay romance stories. The protagonist is always notably more feminine than their love interest, and is the submissive partner. The protagonist is always gay. The love interest is either straight, or bi, or in denial. The general plot revolves around the idea that the protagonist is somehow 'special'; so that the love interest is only falling for him because he's special. Otherwise, the love interest would probably be with a woman. Mary Calmes isn't the only author of gay romance that follows this basic plot idea, nor is it only female authors that go for it. I'm not complaining, but it is an interesting phenomenon of the genre. Overall, a good story. Some nice and steamy scenes as well. Worth a read, but a lower price tag (and smaller size) would be welcome.
