interesting introduction, with sometimes unusual view point

Atiyah's introduction to the law of contract is accessible to the sutdnet beginning on this key part of their law course. However, his views are sometimes rather individual, and it may be best to have formed one's own opinions, from a variety of other sources, before tackling his chapters on, for example, the various measures of damages which are used by the courts

A story of real people like you and me...

Two Tickets to Freedom is the true story of a fugitive slave couple that travel the road to freedom in disguise -- Ellen (by all appearances white) dressed as a slave master and William posing as "his" slave. Their encounters both encourage them and cause them untold fear as they meet abolitionists and slave traders along the way. Faithful to the Lord, they trust solely in His deliverance along the way and on several occasions narrowly miss being caught and returned to slavery.
The book continues with the story of their life in the "free" states under the fugitive slave law, their contribution to the freedom movement, and their escape to England where they could be truly free. Finally, Two Tickets to Freedom tells of their return to The United States at the end of the Civil War and the reality of "freedom" in a now "free" land.
The book was a wonderful experience for me, having read The Underground Railroad by William Still. Two Tickets to Freedom tied together names, places, and events that I had previously read about in sketches. And these people were real people.
I was disappointed with the book in one way. The book promised initially to be written with careful descriptions and appropriate references, making it an easy read aloud for children with a wide range of cognitive abilities. As the book progressed, it became easier to read and flowed easily. Nearing the end, however, the words became more difficult, the concepts more difficult to understand, and the subject a bit harder to recognize. The topic of racial prejudice could have been approached more effectively had the book flowed a little more carefully at the end. And I would love to have had a bit more information about the life of Ellen and William Craft as they began again in Georgia.
Overall, I really liked the story and feel it is a valuable addition to a child's collection of books on American history.

Go Quest, Young Man!

Are you ready to go on the adventure of a lifetime? The first volume in a new trilogy, Bone: Quest for the Spark, Book One follows 12-year-old Tom and his faithful raccoon Roderick on an amazing journey to stop the spread of evil. Along the way, they make some unlikely friends, including three members of the Bone family, two Rat Creatures, a Veni Yan warrior, and a woman who is a cross between Mother Earth and a shapeshifter.

Written by Tom Sniegoski and illustrated by Bone creator Jeff Smith, with color by Steve Hamaker, this book is sure to please fans of adventure stories. It has all the elements which make a journey great: friends, foes, unlikely allies, transportation contraptions, food, good intentions, and sheer determination. Really, all that's missing is a mix tape. When surrounded by all types of beings and personalities, our protagonist, Tom, remains unshaken, making him a wise choice to lead this crazy band of travelers. Mal from Firefly would be proud of this young man.

Between Roderick's blunt declarations to the bumbling Rat Creatures (who, in my mind, sound an awful lot like Lurky from Rainbow Brite), this may be Sniegoski's funniest book to date. It blends comedy and action effortlessly. It also has great pacing. The different characters' plotlines are balanced, then become interwoven, bringing to mind Neil Gaiman's Stardust.

The Bone graphic novels have a large following, and those dedicated readers will love the new stories. Thanks to Smith, Hamaker, and Sniegoski, the first installment of Quest for the Spark wholly captures the spirit of the Bone series in both picture and text. This trilogy will surely spark the interest of new readers as well.

While you are waiting for the second volume in the trilogy, you ought to pick up the original Bone graphic novels as well as Bone: Tall Tales, also by Sniegoski & Smith.

A New Bone Novel

I been a fan of the Bone series of books for years. Jeff Smith created a Bone Universe which I savored like relish upon a hot dog.
Author Tom Sniegoski is a keeper of the Bone flame. He kept the Jeff Smoth created universe with a new twist, Prose instead of a graphic novel format,,and it works well.

Even as an adult, I enjoy this young adult. quest novel series that Sniegoski created. It has that "Lord of the Rings" type feel that the original Bone (or Elfquest) graphic novel series had.

Also, in this novel, It has a young a young hero which makes this a better fit. The character of Tom Elm ,a twelve year old Turnip farmer, will draws younger readership in. Tom, who is the epic's hero like Joseph Campbell would describe, and others are trying to save the dreaming and waking worlds from the darkness created by the Nacht.

This first novel is a great introduction into the Bone universe who those who have never read the graphic novels. It also gives you a reason to invest in Bone: The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume (Vol 1), so you can enjoy continuing into reading the Bone universe

I find only two small faults with this book. One is, as a large bone fan, I wish there were more Jeff Smith art peppered through this book. Second point, I wish the second volume was available in my book store, this novel left me hanging and I wanted to continue on this epic quest..and I wanted more

Beware of format!

I purchased this book as a birthday gift for my son, who is deaf/autistic and has a low reading level. He has all the other Bone books--which are graphic novels--and LOVES reading them. Quest for the Spark, however, is more of a typical young adult read. While there are many pictures, there are also consecutive pages throughout the book which have only text. I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing the book; then I would have known what I was getting. He's still excited about the book and hopefully can muddle through the pages of text. But just a warning to Jeff Smith: My son says he wants to call you and tell you to write a "comic" version of this book!
