This is not your typical fitness book....

This is not another gimmicky fitness book. Michael Carrera has unprecedentedly designed every aspect of the workout with his faith in mind. From the number of repetitions and sets to the unique exercise techniques is all to give glory to God. There are beautiful religious quotes in every chapter of the book and religious and nature photos on the DVD. Moreover, his qualifications as a fitness and health expert is comforting as he has written numerous articles, trained elite athletes, and completed graduate work in fitness.

Maybe There is Something to This Faith Stuff

The Catholic Workout by Michael Carrera

A couple of months ago I was waiting in a downtown restaurant to have lunch with an old friend. The place was crowded with office workers, but I soon saw my friend making her way to the table. I was shocked. She and I are approximately the same age - mid 50's, and I hadn't seen her for nearly three months - she looked at least ten years younger than I remembered. My first thought was that she had had cosmetic surgery. She laughed and said, "I know you aren't that involved with religion, however, I've been doing the "Catholic Workout." I bought the book immediately. I'm not much of "Faith" person, but this exercise/eating plan works. I'm also not particularly athletic, so if I can do the exercises anyone can. So far I'm down 12 pounds. In a world full of all sorts of weight-loss advice and gimmicks, how ironic, it's the "Catholic Workout" that succeeds.

Excellent Product!

First off, I must say that I have not been more pleased with a workout video. I am currently in the RCIA process for joining the Catholic Church, and purchased this as a Christmas gift for my fiancee. Doing this workout has not only helped improve my physical health, but has given me a fun way to learn the prayers of the rosary. I purchased the DVD directly from the author, and I wanted to mention that he has amazing customer service skills! I couldn't have been more thrilled overall with my purchase!

About the Author
Katherine Ackley taught in the English Department at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point from 1979 to 2002 and also served as coordinator of the Women's Studies Program for 10 years and assistant dean of Graduate Studies for five years. Her research interests center on women in literature, with emphasis on literary representations of women's issues and, more recently, British crime writers. Her books include THE NOVELS OF BARBARA PYM (1989), WOMEN AND VIOLENCE IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1990), MISOGYNY IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1992), and ESSAYS FROM CONTEMPORARY CULTURE (2004, 5th Edition). The author of dozens of published articles, she received more than 20 grants for research and development and was the first woman to receive the UWSP University Scholar Award. Dr. Ackley earned a master's degree in English from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in English from Ball State University.

Excellent Book

The author, his real name is Warren Kenton, seems to come from the practical Kabbalah side of this tradition. However, the book is well written and internally coherent and I feel that he puts forth his point of view well in both a theoretical manner and as an experientially based guide. His interpretation of the tree of life and its relationship to the four worlds and the ability of humans to move their focus of attention up and down is an outstanding original contribution. Beats the heck out of the biopsychosocial model used in medicine and is generalizable to many personality types found in the world. It really provides an elegant and cohesive understanding of the states of consciousness that are not in the standard ego mode. This model can be used as a wonderful teaching aid to those who are aware of their spiritual self but are too bogged down in society or bad previous religious experiences to understand non-ego states of being.

The experiential meditation examples are very welcome and helpful, but are not really as well linked into a fabric of understanding. Its kind of like getting a calculus book with a great problem example solution from chapter 15. It is good but where is the context?

Additionaly missing from this author is the sense of historicity, holiness, dangerousness and submission to God's will that must be part and parcel of this work. For this aspect, I would read Aryeh Kaplan's Meditation and Kabbalah.

Halevi has written quite a few introductory level books on Kabbalah which are highly recommended for their conciseness and clarity. This is NOT one of them. Of the dozen of his books I've read, I'd rate this my favorite. Probably because it's one of the most advanced. The other advanced (and more practical in the generic sense) is "School of Kabbalah"). Halevi is a practicing Kabbalist, as opposed to Kabbalistic historians such as Gershom Scholem. Each has his/her place. I'd recommend a sound grounding in Kabbalah before tackling this book. Read some Scholem and some of Halevi's other works first. This is a fine book which includes exercises and visualizations appropriate to the aspiring Kabbalist. It is somewhat reminiscent of "The Shining Paths" by Ashcroft-Nowicki but, perhaps a bit more down to earth. Advanced mystics know that one has to keep one's feet on the ground while one's head is in the clouds. Halevi has his sights set. As he stated in "Introduction to the Cabala" (or the "Tree of Life"), Samuel Weiser, York Beach, ME 1972/1991 p.202, "The rabbis have said that the reason for Existence is that it acts as a vast mirror of contemplation by which God may behold God...the Holy One beholds the Holy One through our experience." Tread the Path, but tread it carefully.

A very inspiring book

The first book of Halevi's that I read was *School of the Soul: Its Path and Pitfalls*, which he published several years after this book. *School of the Soul* describes the development of spiritual groups, while *The Work of the Kabbalist* focuses more on the individual.
People who have heard of (or experienced) the Kabbalah as a strictly Jewish path full of precise rules will find this book refreshing (or perhaps shocking). Although Halevi provides several detailed diagrams based on the traditional Etz Chaim (tree of life), he also devotes a large portion of the text to exercises that seem primarily imaginative.
A key theme in Halevi's books is the awareness that Kabbalah is a living tradition which must adapt to changing circumstances. This flexibility dovetails with his inclusive, welcoming attitude to readers who belong to traditions other than Judaism.
From the outset, the reader will recognize that this book is rooted in many years of personal experience as both student and teacher. Halevi's wisdom and compassion shine through in every chapter, but each reader will naturally find "good parts" that resonate with his or her individual perspective.
I take the liberty of quoting a paragraph from his chapter on Integrity:
"The practice of integrity is vital to a spiritual tradition, for it not only safeguards the individual, but the Work. Over the last few centuries Kabbalistic ideas have been stolen and adulterated by those who only sought magical powers, with the result that an image of dangerous hotchpotch has overlaid the real purpose of Kabbalah. Because of this, the tradition has fallen into disrepute amongst Jews who see it as a degenerate form of occultism. Thus, by the last century the reputation of Kabbalah had fallen from high respect during its most original period in Medieval times to a superstitious repetition of magical formulae. This happened because the Work was not protected in the right way. It is not secrecy that guards the tradition, but correct conduct, and if this is not present, then people do not find the door to the inner path which is their birthright. The lack of real spirituality today amongst clergy has made many Jews and Christians turn to the Eastern religions for their esoteric instruction. This is sad because they have within their own Western traditions all the higher knowledge and methods they need for the development of the Occidental psyche and spirituality."

I almost didn't buy the 2 issues forming the Smoak Signals story because I'm not really into The Flash, but they included Arrow's Felicity Smoak, so I had to. Man, am I glad I did. Not only is the artwork stunning, the storyline is great and introduces a very interesting element that obviously is going to impact Felicity in the future. Lots of action in this story, a good dose of humor, but most importantly, it didn't just crack the door to more story and conflict for Felicity, it threw it wide open. I can't wait to see where this is going and how this element is going to be incorporated into future story for Felicity. This is definitely a must buy 2-parter for any Felicity Smoak fan. I liked it so much I'll be keeping my eye out for the print issue in a few weeks to purchase. Definitely check this out. You don't be disappointed. Intrigued, excited, and maybe writhing in torturous anticipation about the mystery it throws at you? Yes. But not disappointed.

Good Story with Hurried Conclusion

Smoak Signal (featuring Arrow's Felicity Smoak) comes to an end in this story. The art and the interplay between the characters was fun. The resolution felt a little rushed and I found myself whether this would be resolved in a future issue of the Flash or an attempt to check out out Arrow 2.5. Still, a decent story overall.

Well worth your time.

If you have ever wondered about God’s plan for your life, reading Broken Escalators is a savvy use of your time. Pastor Peter Haas has produced prose full of humor, personal narrative, and relevant scripture to help us figure out how to be intentional with our time, teachable (no matter how right we assume we are), and humble about our gifts.

What speaks to me most is his emphasis on surrounding ourselves with uplifting people. Whether we are seeking a mentor, partner, or friend group, we have to look for qualities of true character.

Peter writes, “Scripture says that ‘wisdom from heaven’ is ‘peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy’ (James 3:17), so if the preachers you listen to lack a ‘submissive’ or ‘mercy-filled tone’ their wisdom is not from heaven.”

Ya know how some people are amazing speakers but they're really not great writers or vice-versa? Well, this guy is the real deal on both levels. He's an awesome speaker and just as good of a writer. You will be giggling out of nowhere and then find yourself being pulled into a totally contemplative state. It's full of practical, real-life stuff but also super hilarious and enjoyable. I really wish he would write books more quickly because I'm always bummed when I finish his books. His first book, Pharisectomy, was incredible as well. Highly recommend both.
